IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ALL THINGS EQUINE WHILE LIVING ON THIS REMOTE AND RUGGEDLY BEAUTIFUL COASTLINE.

This is the ideal escape for those wanting to reconnect with their love of horses, nature, themselves and have an incredible equestrian adventure.

During your Wild Coast working holiday adventure you will be living and working at a family-run, working trail riding yard. The programme is limited to a maximum of 5 volunteers, ensuring that you will have a very authentic, hands-on experience. You will be immersed in the day to day activities required to keep the herd of much loved Arab, Boerperd, Thoroughbred and Percheron crosses healthy, fit and exceptionally well cared for. The trail horses need to be kept endurance fit while the youngsters are all started gently with basic groundwork and desensitization before they progress to more strenuous work.

You will be taught the principals of their holistic approach to caring for their horses who live out all year round in the African bush. There will be practical activities like feeding, grooming, basic veterinary (supervised) care if required. Although there are no stables to muck out the paddock may need some cleaning! You may also be asked to clean tack and water buckets etc… all part of getting your hands dirty with the rest of the team!

And of course, you will ride every day! From exercising and schooling the horses in basic dressage and flatwork, to popping them over a few jumps in the arena or cross country. You may also assist on the client day rides, riding as back up on the glorious stretches of unspoiled beach or venturing inland into the beautiful rolling hills of the rural Eastern Cape. One of the highlights is always taking the horses out with the team to gallop on the beach, splashing in the shallow waves. Or how about trying a river crossing at low tide? Swimming alongside your horse? As part of their ethos of holistic horse care, the yard frequently hosts “Riding with Touch” workshops (at an extra cost). This is an introduction to Ride with Your Mind and T-Touch methodologies.

When you are not busy with the horses you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach and explore the local surroundings. Volunteers often enjoy socializing in the local village, enjoy a boat trip on the Kei River, go abseiling in Morgan Bay, go on a Big 5 Jeep Safari or visit a local Township Tour.

It is a place of steep green hills, rugged rockfaces, plunging cliffs; a land of untouched pristine white-beaches, forests, untamable waves – and numerous shipwrecks.

How we care for our horses

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses on the Wild Coast are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:
  • All horses live out and are looked after in a holistic way.
  • The inter-connection between horses and people is an integral part of our beliefs and we live by this equine philosophy.
  • After a 7 night Wild Coast Horse Trail horses get a week to 10 days off.
  • The horses are rotated as needed depending on the fitness schedules, trails, and individual needs.

Please let us know if you have any more questions around this.
