Experience The Magic Of Africa Riding Through This Rhino Sanctuary

Experience South Africa like never before – on horseback! Explore this unique wilderness and get closer to wildlife than you could ever imagine.

Welcome to Entabeni, meaning “The Place of the Mountain”, a breathtaking wilderness reserve in South Africa where horse riding in Africa reaches a whole new level. This 22,000-hectare malaria-free reserve, just a few hours from Johannesburg, boasts an incredible diversity of landscapes and wildlife. What makes this riding adventure truly extraordinary is the rare opportunity to ride through a rhino sanctuary, where these endangered giants roam freely. There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of encountering a rhino, giraffe, or even a cheetah from horseback. Out of the saddle, game drives provide another perspective, giving you the chance to spot Africa’s legendary wildlife, from lazy lions to elusive leopards.

Experience Africa through the horse’s ear, as you traverse ever-changing terrain—winding through rocky outcrops, cantering across open plains, and exploring hidden valleys where wildlife roams free. Each day is filled with unforgettable encounters, from tracking rhinos on horseback to watching giant elephants amble past as you ride. Evenings bring a mix of adventure and comfort, with nights spent in secluded fly camps, a tented camp, and a wilderness lodge where you can relax after exhilarating days in the saddle.

Whether you choose a 5-night journey or take on the ultimate 7-night riding adventure, every moment is filled with discovery. As the sun sets, gather around a crackling fire for delicious three-course meals, warm hospitality, and fireside storytelling beneath a sky ablaze with stars. At Entabeni, no two days are ever the same—just pure, untamed Africa, waiting to be explored on horseback.

Touch down at OR Tambo International Airport, where a representative will be waiting to transfer you to Entabeni Private Reserve. The journey north takes approximately two and a half hours, leading you into the breathtaking landscapes of the UNESCO-listed Waterberg Biosphere. Settle into the Wild-Side Tented Camp and enjoy a delicious lunch before an introduction to the days ahead. The afternoon kicks off with a wildlife drive (approximately three hours), offering a chance to spot the iconic Big Five from the comfort of an open safari vehicle. After soaking in the African wilderness, return to camp for dinner and a restful night in the bush.

DAY 2: WILDLIFE DRIVE - MORNING & AFTERNOON RIDE

An early start offers an optional wildlife drive (three hours) to witness the bush come alive at dawn. Upon return, enjoy a hearty breakfast before meeting the horses for the first ride of the safari. The morning ride (approximately two and a half to three hours) takes you across open plains with the possibility of encountering elephants, cheetahs, or other wildlife. After lunch and some downtime by the pool, the adventure continues with an afternoon ride (approximately two and a half hours), weaving through scenic landscapes in search of zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and more. As the sun dips below the horizon, gather around the campfire for a well-earned dinner under the stars.

DAY 3: WILDLIFE DRIVE- RIDE TO THE UPPER ESCARPMENT - FLY CAMP

Greet the sunrise with a morning wildlife drive (three hours) before returning for breakfast. The adventure takes a new turn as riders ascend the renowned Yellowwood Kloof, the steepest man-made road in Southern Africa. Portions of the route require leading the horses on foot, while flatter sections allow for riding. The journey (approximately five to six hours) winds through dramatic mountain passes and lush valleys, eventually revealing vast savannah plains teeming with wildlife. A scenic stop at natural rock pools provides a chance for a refreshing swim before continuing toward fly camp. As the horses settle in nearby paddocks, guests are welcomed with traditional songs, sundowner drinks, and a three-course meal, immersing fully in the untamed beauty of the African bush.

DAY 4: TRACKING RHINO ON HORSEBACK - SUNDOWNER RIDE

Wake to the sounds of the wild and a steaming cup of coffee by the fire. The morning ride (approximately two and a half hours) sets out in search of rhino, following their tracks across open plains and rocky outcrops. Wildlife encounters may bring guests thrillingly close to giraffe and other iconic species. After returning to camp for lunch and some relaxation, the afternoon ride (approximately two and a half hours) climbs to one of the highest points in the reserve—an unforgettable spot for a sundowner drink. As twilight sets in, return to camp for an atmospheric dinner beneath the stars, with lantern-lit pathways creating a magical ambiance.

DAY 5: RIDE TO KINGFISHER LODGE - AFTERNOON WILDLIFE DRIVE

After a final breakfast at fly camp, the journey continues with a ride (three to four hours) toward the next destination—Kingfisher Lodge. Nestled beside a tranquil lake, this elegant retreat offers a change of pace with added comforts and stunning waterfront views. Hippos may be spotted wallowing nearby as guests settle in and enjoy lunch. The afternoon brings another wildlife drive (three hours), focusing on encounters with rhino, hippos, and plains game such as eland and giraffe. The evening is spent unwinding in this serene lodge, taking in the beauty of the upper escarpment.

DAY 6: RIDE TO LOWER ESCARPMENT - OPTIONAL WILDLIFE DRIVE

An early wake-up call signals the start of another adventure. You can choose between a morning wildlife drive (three hours) or a guided bush walk before breakfast. The day’s ride (approximately five hours) descends into the Big Five territory of the lower escarpment, offering thrilling wildlife encounters along the way. By lunchtime, riders arrive back at Wild-Side Tented Camp, where an afternoon of relaxation awaits. For those still eager for more adventure, an optional wildlife drive is available before a final night spent at this familiar bush camp.

DAY 7: RIDE TO FIG TREE FLY CAMP - FAREWELL CELEBRATION

The day begins with an optional wildlife drive before breakfast. With bags packed and ready for collection, riders set out for a long journey across the reserve, heading toward the stable yard and onward to a new fly camp nestled under a majestic fig tree. A bush lunch provides a well-earned break before reaching the evening’s destination, where a warm welcome, crackling fire, and sundowner drinks await. After spending approximately five hours in the saddle, guests are treated to a special farewell dinner, complete with traditional dance and song, marking the last night in the wild.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE

The last morning in the bush begins with a farewell ride, soaking up the final moments in the African wilderness. THE DESTINATION

Entabeni Game Reserve

Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s untamed wilderness, Bezhoek Private Nature Reserve is a hidden gem of rolling hills, dramatic rocky outcrops, and sweeping grasslands. This breathtaking landscape is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, from graceful giraffes and herds of zebra to elusive leopards and soaring birds of prey. It is steeped in history, with ancient San rock art hidden among its cliffs, a silent testament to the generations who once roamed this land. Whether galloping across golden savannahs or pausing to watch the sunset paint the sky, every moment here is an adventure waiting to unfold.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for the quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Entabeni are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. The  horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • The horses roam freely on the reserve, building confidence and staying relaxed as they interact with wildlife. It’s not uncommon to find them grazing peacefully alongside wildlife as part of their daily routine
  • Each morning, horses are brought in for feeding and exercise, with a second feeding at sunset
  • Regular deworming and tick treatments are provided, all vaccinations are up to date, and they receive necessary supplements to maintain their overall health
  • Most of the horses are barefoot, with a farrier visiting every 6-7 weeks to maintain hoof health
  • Horses are rotated regularly, with one day off for every day worked, and a maximum of two safaris per month
  • Between safaris, horses are schooled to keep them happy and fit for exploring the bush
  • Every horse is personally trained by the owner, Cecile, ensuring they’re well-prepared and responsive
