We consider riders to be intermediate plus if you have been riding for many years and are well balanced in the saddle. You are confident in controlling a sensible but fit horse, e.g. a thoroughbred, at all paces and in the outdoors.

Intermediate Plus riders can head out on all of our horse safaris, including our lodge-based and expedition style riding holidays. If you want to go on horse safari where there is big game such as lion, elephant and leopard present, then you will need an advanced or intermediate plus level of riding. You will need to be well balanced in the saddle, ride with contact and able to react to all eventualities. You will need to be able to post in the trot for at least 10 minutes at a time, and canter in a two-point position for at least 5 minutes over uneven ground. While your guides keep you very safe, wildlife is unpredictable – It is essential for your own safety and your enjoyment that you are confident at all paces, able to gallop out of trouble if required and keep your balance should you need to pull up quickly.

Remember that riding out in the wilderness might be very different from what you’re used to in the area or back home. You’ll be on trail rides across various different terrains, often having to keep an eye out for animal holes, low hanging tree branches and rocks. The joy of horse riding in Africa is being able to get off the beaten path and follow the wildlife trails, which makes for some challenging and exciting horse riding! You might need to mount up from the ground or a handy fallen log, and you’ll often spend 4-8 hours in the saddle a day, so being riding fit will definitely be in your favour!

Most of the horses are English Trained, so we recommend that any Western riders take some lessons doing English riding. They do respond to neck reining in the bush, however, they are used to being ridden with contact which might be very different from what you’re used to. You will need to become accustomed to posting in the trot and being well balanced in a two-point canter.

FAQ for Intermediate Plus Horse Riding Tours

How do I know if I am an Intermediate Plus or Advanced rider?

Our team of safari experts can help you choose the right riding level by asking you some questions on the phone. If you have been riding for a few years, and ride regularly, but don’t necessarily compete, then you’d likely be more Intermediate Plus than Advanced.

How fit do I need to be to go on horse safari?

Different safaris require different levels of fitness. For our trail riding safaris, you will be spending 4 – 6 hours in the saddle each day, so we recommend that you ride a few times a week to prepare for your safari. A good level of general fitness is also very beneficial as you’ll have less fatigue and get the most out of your adventure.

How many hours will I be riding for?

Depending on which safari you join, you can expect to spend anywhere from 1 – 7 hours in the saddle. Our trail based rides likely include longer hours in the saddle as you will need to cover lots of ground to make it to the next camp – which can result in some thrilling rides & animal sightings.

What is a two-point canter?

A two-point canter is also known as the jumping position. This is because the rider’s legs form the only two points of contact with the horse. In this position, the rider leans forward and slightly lifts their seat out of the saddle, distributing their weight more evenly over the horse’s withers. So you’ll need to be strong and balanced in the saddle in order to ride confidently on your horseback safari.

What do you mean by posting in the trot?

Posting in the trot, also known as rising trot, is a riding technique where the rider alternates between sitting and rising with the horse’s trotting motion to maintain balance and reduce impact, allowing for a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Can I bring my camera or binoculars on the rides?

Definitely. You will get loads of opportunities to capture footage if you’re interested in wildlife photography. Bringing a camera and binoculars is generally encouraged to capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife. Ensure your equipment is securely stored during the ride and won’t interfere with your safety or the horse’s comfort.

What happens if I’m not quite as capable as I thought?

It’s important to know your own boundaries when it comes to choosing the right ride for you. If you’ve taken a break from riding or are not as confident as you would like to be, perhaps starting on a lodge-based ride would be more suitable than a trail-based ride. That way, you can take a break from the saddle and do other activities like game drives and walks. If the guides feel that your riding is not strong enough, they may insist that you only do non-riding activities – it’s up to their discretion.

I haven’t ridden in a long time, can I still be considered an intermediate plus rider?

If you’re not riding fit, then it’s better to put yourself down as an intermediate rider. There are still some incredible riding holidays that you can do, and you’ll soon find yourself inspired to spend more time in the saddle! If you can escape to Africa for a longer period, then you can always start on a slightly slower ride to gain your confidence before heading out on a faster or more challenging horse safari.

Will I have to be able to gallop on a horse safari?

We definitely have a few safaris that will allow you to gallop through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Africa. We defin
