Adventure, Riding & Unforgettable African Wildlife Experiences
Be among the first to experience South Africa’s newest horse safari adventure, born from conservation, crafted for connection.
Bushwillow Lodge is the latest addition to the Ant Africa Safaris collection, set within an expanded reserve that now protects over 1,100 hectares of pristine Waterberg wilderness. After more than 30 years of conservation success, the Ants team has been able to grow their reserve even further, creating more space for wildlife to thrive and riders to explore. Rhino protection remains at the heart of their mission, and every guest here becomes part of that ongoing story.
This intimate camp offers a chance to slow down and reconnect with nature. Here, the noise of everyday life fades away, replaced by birdsong, the distant rumble of hooves, and the crackle of the evening fire. Days are spent exploring the wilderness on horseback, pausing for long bush lunches and golden-hour sundowners, while evenings invite deep rest under an endless canopy of stars. A stay at Bushwillow grounds you, recharges you, and reminds you what it means to live in the moment.
From your private deck, watch giraffe, zebra, and antelope roam, while buffalo patrol the ridges nearby. And then saddle up for some of the closest wildlife encounters possible on horseback! The riding is as diverse as the landscape, from flowing open tracks perfect for long canters to more technical routes winding through rocky ridges and river valleys. The horses live freely among the wildlife, and there is nothing quite like reaching a sundowner spot, untacking your horse, and watching it wander back through the bush on its own.
And when you need a break from the saddle, guided bush walks, game drives, or quiet lodge moments provide equally unforgettable experiences. You can also head out on a Big 5 Game Drive in a nearby reserve for the chance to see elephants, lions and even leopard.
Bushwillow blends adventure, tranquillity, and purpose. This is the perfect horseback adventure, whether you’re travelling solo (no single supplement), as a couple, with friends, or want to book out the camp for an exclusive safari.
QUICK FACTS
SAMPLE ITINERARY / WHAT TO EXPECT
This is a sample itinerary of the riding and experiences you may have during your safari. The itinerary is fluid, and any changes will always be made with your best interests at heart – perhaps ticking off extra bucket list wildlife moments, finding unique dining locations and discovering places off the beaten track. Every day is an adventure!
DAY 1 - ARRIVAL & WELCOME DINNER
Book your flight to OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, ensuring you arrive before 10h00. Your driver will meet you and your fellow riders at the Information Desk, and then your exciting adventure will begin. The scenic drive to Bushwillow Camp will take approximately three hours. Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have the opportunity to settle in and enjoy the tranquil and relaxing atmosphere of the wilderness around you. The afternoon offers a leisurely walk to the sundowner spot to stretch your legs after a long day of travelling. A hearty welcome meal awaits you after sundowners.
DAY 2 -MORNING & AFTERNOON RIDES
In the morning, saddle up for an introductory ride where you will have the opportunity to become acquainted with your trusty steed, who will be your perfect companion for the next few days of exciting riding in the bush! This introductory ride serves as a gentle initiation to the reserve and offers you a first epic encounter with the wildlife in the area before heading back to the lodge for a delicious lunch and an afternoon siesta. The afternoon sees you heading out for another exciting ride. This area is a haven for wildlife such as giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, eland and buffalo.
DAY 3 - RIDING & LUNCH AT THE DAM
Embark on an early adventure from Bushwillow Camp into the surrounding reserve. The reserve boasts 12 different ecological zones ranging from open grassy plains to thick savanna bushveld, allowing you to experience a myriad of different environments and beautiful sweeping views. Head to the dam for a relaxing picnic lunch under the shade of the trees. In the afternoon, you’ll saddle up again for a leisurely ride back to the lodge.
DAY 4 - FULL DAY RIDE & BUSH LUNCH
Head out early for a full-day ride where you will have the opportunity to venture deep into the reserve and experience more of the wildlife on offer. You may cross into the main Ant’s Reserve today, finding new trails to ride. You may have the opportunity to ride in close proximity to rhino, please be aware that this does not happen near the camp itself, but rather on the main Ant’s reserve. Enjoy a delicious lunch in the bush before continuing your afternoon ride back towards camp.Â
DAY 5 - MORNING RIDE & OPTIONAL BIG 5 GAME DRIVE
Exploring Ant’s reserve on horseback always promises surprises as you set off for a morning ride, with unpredictable encounters with wildlife. In the afternoon, you have the choice to either relax at camp or head out on a Big 5 game drive on a nearby reserve. This is at an additional cost, subject to availability, and highly recommended. This game drive offers the exciting opportunity to see larger wildlife like elephant, lion, and leopard that you won’t see at Ants. You may also get the chance to see some of the rarer nocturnal animals, such as civet, genet, and maybe even porcupine, as you head back to camp for a late dinner.
DAY 6 - RIDING & SUNDOWNERS
Today’s route leaves early and explores more of the surrounding reserve before heading back to camp for an enjoyable picnic brunch. The afternoon ride is more relaxing, giving you time to really take in the scenery around you. The ride will end at Koshkari Koppie, where you’ll untack the horses and let them wander home in the warm golden light – something very special about Ants! The views and sunset here will take your breath away. Drive back to the lodge for dinner.
DAY 7 - RIDING, NIGHT DRIVE & TRADITIONAL BOMA DINNER
Today you will set out to one of the neighbouring farms, Koshari, for the last ride of your epic horseback safari adventure. Head back to Bushwillow for lunch, a siesta and afternoon tea. Sundowners tonight will be at The Shack, one of the newest additions to the reserve. Then hop into the game drive vehicle for a night drive back to Bushwillow, offering the perfect chance to spot nocturnal wildlife. Back at the lodge, enjoy a traditional South African boma dinner. At the end of the night, you’ll be able to sit around the fire with your fellow travellers, reminiscing on the week gone by.
DAY 8 - DEPARTURE
On your last day, enjoy a tranquil morning at the lodge followed by a hearty brunch before your departure at 12h00 back to OR Tambo Airport. We recommend you book your onward flights departing after 18h00.

The rooms come with comfortable twin or king-sized beds, air conditioning for those warm summer nights, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Outside, your private verandah invites you to enjoy a morning coffee or watch wildlife wander past at sunset, the ideal way to enjoy the rhythm of safari life. What makes it special is that it has a private kitchen and a central lounge area where everyone can gather to relax after a day of exploring. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet afternoon with a book or sharing stories of your adventures over a glass of wine, the cottage’s inviting atmosphere encourages bonding.
THE DESTINATION
Waterberg
The Waterberg is an exceptional and internationally recognised natural heritage site and is a unique wilderness area of South Africa yet to be fully discovered. Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are nestled into the folds of the stunning Waterberg bushveld on a 12500 acre private reserve. This diverse environment naturally sustains over 40 species of game including giraffe, white rhino, sable antelope, roan antelope, buffalo, nyala, gemsbok (Oryx), kudu, Livingstone eland, blue wildebeest (gnu), red hartebeest, zebra, impala, bushbuck, duiker, steenbuck, mountain reedbuck, waterbuck, warthog, blesbuck, baboons, bushpig, klipspringer, leopard, jackal, brown hyena, caracal, civet and genet to name but a few. The area is also excellent for birding with over 250 species of resident and migrant birds.
HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES
Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at The Ant’s Collection are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:
- Our horses live out year round in a herd, allowing them to live naturally alongside all the other animals on the reserve including the Rhino and Buffalo
- They are bought in twice a day to be feed, checked, groomed and temperatures taken by our devoted guides. Our thoroughbreds and older horses get extra special care in the winter and are kept in at night, rugged, and given extra food
- The horses all get a physio and dentist visit at least once a year. The farrier comes every 6 weeks to shoe, and check the horses which are barefoot (they try to keep as many horses as possible barefoot)
- Our saddles are specially designed for trails which mean they are comfortable for the horse, distributing the riders weight evenly, preventing any back issues. Our tack is checked and cleaned regularly to ensure it is kept to the best possible standards
- A careful record is kept of how much work each horse does to ensure they have rest days and are not overworked. We have a dedicated onsite horse trainer who is continually keeping our horses in tip top shape
