For experienced riders, it offers some wonderful long canters and unforgettable wildlife sightings from horseback. It’s also the perfect horse-riding vacation for families or those who want to experience a horse safari for the first time.  The open plains are perfect for long, thrilling rides alongside the herds of wildebeest, giraffe and zebra. After a day’s ride, just unsaddle your horse and let it wander off into the sunset to rejoin the herd.

Then head downstream to Chundukwa River Lodge. Set on a beautiful family-run ranch with luxury wooden chalets nestled in the foliage along the Zambezi River. This special place is filled with local craftsmanship, wonderful colourful fabrics and warm hospitality.  From your riverfront hideaway, you get to explore Zambia’s jewel, the mighty Victoria Falls.

Included in your safari is 4 days of riding in Simalaha, a ride at Chunduwka River Lodge, a sunset cruise, a private driver and guide to explore Livingstone and the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. We’ve also included some unique adventures, including a full day Chobe Day Trip and a walking safari to see the rhinos in Mosi-Oa-Tuyna National Park. And for those more daring – how about a swim in Devil’s or Angel’s Pool?

Ideal for intermediate riders and above who want to extend their time in Africa without crossing borders. We can create bespoke vacations for two to eight people. TOUR REVIEWS

Highlights from my trip to Zambia. For me anyway the highlight was cantering with a herd of zebra on the plains!! A memory that will stick with me for the rest of my life... what an incredible experience. I rode Bullet she was such a dote, super sassy but a sweetheart underneath it all... Tara rode Soho and Eric had George... I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all loved our horses. They were so well schooled and not your typical trail horses! Riding home in the supermoon was incredible too. Riding among the giraffes, antelope (all species of them!) the birds, wildebeest, zebra, ostrich!! We were in awe of the whole thing. The skies in Africa really are just something else... Also had a very close encounter with a leopard in Kafue! That was awesome. The food and the people and the hospitality was just perfect, we really had an awesome time.

After a leisurely morning in your riverside Zambezi Chalet, it’s time to embark on your Zambezi Horseback Safari. Your adventure starts with a 40 minute road transfer to a small African harbour called Mambova. Local villagers and fishermen trade their daily catch here and it is a kaleidoscope of colour, noise, children, goats and chickens! By this stage you are firmly off the tourist circuit and will be in a beautiful, remote part ofAfrica. From Mambova, you’ll set off on a two-hour boat journey upstream along the mighty Zambezi, Africa’s fourth-largest river. Along the way, you may spot hippos and crocodiles, local fishermen navigating their traditional canoes called mokoros ,cattle grazing on the riverbanks, and scenic, remote village landscapes. Make sure you have your riding gear onboard as you will  be jumping straight onto a horse when you arrive. When you reach the end of your boat ride, keep an eye out for the horses waiting on the riverbank, ready to take you to camp. Each day will slightly differ, the route will be determined by Doug, ensuring an unforgettable horse safari. Start the day with some tea or coffee and a light breakfast, before you set off on your morning ride. Spend the morning exploring the Simalaha Wilderness on horseback, an area of epic significance – 180,000km² of raw wilderness – a place to immerse oneself in the vast plains. As you ride, you’ll gently approach huge herds of zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and other wildlife that call this place home. Ride through the mopane forests, amoungst the ancient baobab trees and along the lifegiving Zambezi River. Your guides will tell you all about how the fruits and flowers are used to make local delicacies and medicines. On horseback you’ll often come across the people that call this land home. The Lozi people go abouttheir day-to-day lives between the river banks and their homesteads, moving their cattle along the riverbeds and fishing for their families on the river. It’s great to be able to be immersed in this quieter way of life, where time stands still. The childre nare fascinated by the horses, and the welcoming locals arealways willing to show guests their way of life. You will return to camp for lunch and a siesta or swim. This is a great time to birdwatch, or watch the wildlife coming to drink at the waterhole – or simply snooze in the shade. Later on, as it gets cooler, you’ll will set out once more on a sundowner ride. In the evening you willbe served a delicious dinner at sunset.

After a good night’s rest and a hearty fresh breakfast, it’s time to explore Victoria Falls. Start the morning with a hearty breakfast, followed by an immersive walk in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park to see the protected white rhino on foot. There are many additional experiences that you may want to do and the driver guide will take you there, wait for you and bring you home safely at the end of the day. These outsourced activities are extra and for your own account. A magnet for tourists of all descriptions, Victoria Falls is one of Earth’s great spectacles. THE DESTINATION

Simalaha Conservancy

Found at the southern edge of Zambia, bordering the Zambezi River, is an expansive area of African wilderness. Simalaha, (said Sim – a – la – ha) meaning ‘come together’, is a fitting name for the area, as the Simalaha Community Conservancy (part of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area) has worked hard to protect and preserve the local wildlife and promote sustainable tourism. Started in 2012 by the chiefs of the Sekute Chiefdom, together with support from Peace Parks and local operators such as Dough and Gail, the project has introduced over 1,100 animals into the conservation area including zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and waterbucks. The aim is to provide a sanctuary where wildlife and people can co-exist as they did in the past.

Chunkukwa River Lodge, Zambezi River

As the mighty Zambezi River crashes over the gorge, it drops 108 metres into a powerful whirlpool, forming the largest sheet of falling water in the world – Victoria Falls. Traditionally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning the ‘Smoke that Thunders’) it is a sight not to be missed. Staying at Chundukwa River Lodge, on the Zambezi River offers a unique experience, away from the hustle of the touristic towns, but close enough to experience the magic of the falls.  Staying on the Zambian side also offers visitors the chance to swim in the renowned Devil’s Pool – a unique swim on the edge of the falls!

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for the quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Simalaha and Chudukwa are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

Horses at dawn
  • Horses are at the heart of Doug and Gail’s family-run Simalaha stables. Doug can often be found taking guests on trails, playing or teaching Polocrosse and training or rehabilitating horses. Murray, Doug’s son, is the herd’s Master Farrier and looks after all of the horses’ hooves.
  • The herd of horses live out, freely grazing on the Simalaha plains and are brought in twice a day for grooming, vetting and feeding.
  • Each guest is allocated two horses, to allow horses plenty of resting time in between rides.
  • All of the horses have endearing qualities and gentle natures. You will be appropriately matched with your horses based on your riding experience.
  • Well-schooled under the guidance of Doug, they have been carefully introduced to the bush and wildlife to give you a safe and enjoyable experience
