Luxury Horse Riding & Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters from the saddle

Fall in love with the next chapter of the Ant Africa Safari’s story on a thrilling Big Five riding adventure.

Introducing a brand new horse safari for experienced riders looking to explore one of South Africa’s most exciting riding destinations. As the sister lodge to the hugely popular Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill, Ant’s River Lodge brings together the same incredible horses, guiding and warm hospitality that have made Ant Safari such a favourite over the years. It is a brilliant first safari in Africa for confident riders wanting the full horseback safari experience, but equally perfect for returning Ant’s guests who are ready for something a little wilder.

Set within the vast Kaingo Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Waterberg region, the riding here feels wonderfully wild and untouched. The reserve stretches across more than 16,000 hectares of bushveld, river valleys and mountains, and you’ll often ride for hours without seeing game drive vehciles or people. Spend your days exploring open plains, winding riverbeds, rocky tracks and thick bush on fit, responsive horses that are fun, forward-going and beautifully looked after. The pace varies throughout the day, with plenty of opportunities for long canters balanced with quieter moments to watch wildlife and soak up the scenery.

As a genuine Big 5 safari destination, wildlife is a huge part of the experience and every ride feels full of anticipation. Elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard all roam freely across the reserve, alongside giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and countless antelope species. Some afternoons, you may swap the saddle for a game drive vehicle and spend time tracking big cats or capturing those incredible close-up safari photographs.

Back at Ant’s River Lodge, the atmosphere is relaxed, personal and welcoming from the moment you arrive. Your spacious riverside room overlooks the Mokolo River, meals are often enjoyed around the fire beneath the stars, and the staff have that rare gift of making guests feel completely at home. And after a long day in the saddle, there’s something pretty special about unwinding with a spa treatment while listening to hippos in the river below.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL & INTRODUCTORY RIDE

You will be met at OR Tambo (Johannesburg) International Airport and a shuttle will take you through to Ants River Lodge. The drive is approximately 3 hours and we recommend you arrive before 10am to make the most of your first day at camp. On arrival, you  will be handed an ice-cold drink and introduced to the staff before being shown to your room. After settling in, lunch will be served out on the deck and the team will chat you through the safety briefing and let you know what to expect over the next week.

Then it’s time to head out on your first first ride, an introduction to the horses and the reserve. These rides are deliberately taken at a slower pace to let you enjoy the sunsets and make the most of those Kodak moments provided by the extensive bird- and wildlife. You’ll arrive back at came in the evening light. After a hot shower, drinks and snacks are served in the riverside viewing deck before sitting down to a delicious alfresco dinner. Fall asleep to the sound of the hippos playing in the river below.

DAY 2- 7: A TYPICAL DAY ON SAFARI

Your day begins with an early breakfast at the lodge as the bush slowly comes alive. The morning ride is a memorable way to explore the reserve. Riding through wide open grasslands and along winding riverbeds, you may encounter herds of plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, impala, kudu, and giraffe. With a little luck, you may also come across members of the Big 5 – all from horseback! Enjoy steady canters across open grasslands or gentle walks in quieter areas, taking in the landscape and wildlife.

Midday is spent deep in the bush, where a beautifully prepared picnic lunch awaits. Set beneath shady trees or overlooking sweeping plains, this is a highlight of the day, offering time to rest, refuel, and share stories from the morning’s adventure. In the afternoon, you head out once again on horseback, or on a
game drive to explore new areas of the reserve. As the afternoon progresses, the light softens, the wildlife becomes more active, and the scenery takes on a golden glow. The afternoon pace is often slower and more contemplative, allowing you time to truly absorb the rhythm of the bush and the thrill of riding among Africa’s wildlife. As evening falls, you return to camp, in time to freshen up. Dinner is served around the campfire beneath a blanket of stars.
This is the perfect moment to swap stories from the day and relive close encounters. Fall asleep to the distant calls of wildlife in the river valley. Tomorrow, another day of adventure awaits!

DAY 8 - DEPARTURE

On your last day, enjoy a tranquil morning at the lodge followed by a hearty brunch before your departure at 12h00 back to OR Tambo Airport. We recommend you book your onward flights departing after 18h00.

THE ACCOMMODATION

Set right along the banks of the Mokolo River, Ant’s River Lodge has the same relaxed, welcoming feel that guests love so much about the Ant Safari properties. With just ten spacious riverside rooms, it never feels busy, and there is plenty of space to settle in between rides. The main lodge is open and airy, with a thatched lounge and bar, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a pool overlooking the plains and a traditional boma where dinners are often enjoyed around the fire beneath the stars. Wildlife regularly wanders past the lodge during the day, so even downtime still feels very much part of the safari experience.

The Suites

The rooms at Ant’s River Lodge are dotted along the riverbank, giving each one a quiet, private feel with lovely views from the veranda. The style is classic safari lodge with natural materials, earthy colours and simple, comfortable interiors that feel in keeping with the surroundings. All rooms are en-suite and can be made up as either doubles or twins, with air conditioning for warmer days and heated blankets  and hot water bottles for chilly winter nights. After a long day in the saddle, it is a lovely place to come back to, whether you are sitting outside listening to the hippos or sinking into bed after dinner around the fire.

THE DESTINATION

Waterberg

The Waterberg is a vast mountainous region in Limpopo Province in northern South Africa, known for its dramatic landscapes, rich biodiversity and deep conservation history. Characterised by red sandstone cliffs, wide valleys, bushveld plains and seasonal rivers, it is one of South Africa’s most important wildlife areas and a recognised UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The region is malaria-free and home to a remarkable variety of species, making it particularly well suited to safari travel. Its combination of open terrain, wildlife density and varied scenery also makes it one of the country’s best horseback safari destinations.

Kaingo Private Game Reserve

Covering more than 16,000 hectares of protected wilderness within the Waterberg region. The reserve was created with a strong conservation focus, with tourism directly supporting habitat protection and wildlife management across the area. Landscapes range from open savannah and river systems to rocky hills and dense bushveld, creating excellent biodiversity and varied riding terrain. Kaingo is home to the Big 5, alongside giraffe, zebra, hippo and numerous antelope species, as well as more than 250 bird species. Ancient Bushman sites found within the reserve also provide insight into the area’s long human history.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Ant Africa Safaris are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • At Ant’s Nest, Ant’s Hill & Bushwillow, the horses live out year round in a herd, allowing them to live naturally alongside all the other animals on the reserve including the Rhino and Buffalo. At River Lodge, they are in huge paddocks during the day, and come into stables at night, ensuring their safety.
  • They are bought in twice a day to be feed, checked, groomed and temperatures taken by our devoted guides. Tur thoroughbreds and older horses get extra special care in the winter and are kept in at night, rugged, and given extra food
  • The horses all get a physio and dentist visit at least once a year. The farrier comes every 6 weeks to shoe, and check the horses which are barefoot (they try to keep as many horses as possible barefoot)
  • The saddles are specially designed for trails which mean they are comfortable for the horse, distributing the riders weight evenly, preventing any back issues. Our tack is checked and cleaned regularly to ensure it is kept to the best possible standards
  • A careful record is kept of how much work each horse does to ensure they have rest days and are not overworked.
They have a dedicated onsite horse trainers and volunteers who continually keep the horses in tip top shape
