Embark on a Luxury Horse Riding Holiday in the Masai Mara
Experience the freedom of riding in the Masai Mara, combined with riverside luxury and the feeling that time has quietly slowed down.
There’s something deeply special about life at House in the Wild. You wake to the sounds of the river and coffee delivered to your verandah before heading out on a sunrise ride across the plains as giraffe and zebra move quietly through the morning light. By midday, you might be lingering over a long lunch beneath the trees before retreating for a massage, a refreshing swim or an armchair safari watching elephants wander down to the river below camp. Later, perhaps it’s a private game drive searching for the pride of lions spotted earlier that morning, followed by pink gin and tonics at sunset. And then end your night with stories shared around the bonfire before dinner beneath the stars. Every day feels beautifully unhurried, shaped entirely around what you feel like doing.
Set within the private Enonkishu Conservancy on the edge of the Masai Mara, House in the Wild is the only lodge in the Mara where horseback safaris are part of everyday life. Owner-operated and wonderfully personal, the lodge accommodates just 20 guests across ten individually designed cottages and suites, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a private home than a traditional safari lodge. Romantic rooms feature copper bathtubs overlooking the river and outdoor showers beneath the stars, while spacious family cottages are ideal for longer, slower stays with children or friends. Private vehicles, flexible guiding and tailor-made safari experiences allow every stay to unfold differently, whether you are travelling solo, as a couple or with family.
The riding is flexible, relaxed and completely tailored around your riding experience and interests. Strong riders can head out for longer horseback safaris with plenty of opportunities for fast riding, often encountering elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo and vast herds of plains game along the way. Beginners and children are equally well looked after with gentle rides closer to the lodge, calm horses and patient guides. For non-riders, or when you want a break for the saddle, there is a wide range of activities to enjoy, from game drives, guided nature walks, photography lessons and cultural visits, to a memorable trip to the nearby rhino sanctuary. No two days are ever the same, with each bringing a fresh perspective and a new adventure in this beautiful corner of the Mara.

You’ll arrive back at came in the evening light. After a hot shower, drinks and snacks are served in the riverside viewing deck before sitting down to a delicious alfresco dinner. Fall asleep to the sound of the hippos playing in the river below.
A TYPICAL DAY ON SAFARI
Wake up to the sounds of the Mara River and the dawn chorus drifting through the riverine forest. As the sky softens with first light, enjoy a light breakfast before heading out to meet your horse. The morning ride takes you deep into the conservancy, following ancient wildlife pathways and moving quietly through
open plains, acacia woodland and along the riverbanks. Riding among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and antelope is a magical experience, and with luck you may encounter elephant, buffalo or even big cats as they move through their territories. From horseback, you travel far beyond where vehicles can go, feeling
truly immersed in the landscape and its wildlife.
After a rewarding morning in the saddle, return to the lodge for a relaxed lunch and time to rest. As the afternoon light begins to soften, you head out once more, either for a gentle evening ride or a scenic game drive through the conservancy. This is one of the most beautiful times of day, when the Mara glows gold and the wildlife becomes more active.
Sundowners are often enjoyed in a peaceful spot overlooking the plains or beside the river as the sun slips below the horizon. Gentle rides through the Naretoi sanctuary are perfect for beginners and families, often passing giraffe and zebra along the way, while stronger riders can enjoy longer rides and fast canters across the Enonkishu Conservancy. Early mornings are particularly magical, ending with a bush breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the African bush.

This is a perfect place for a safe and enjoyable introduction to riding in Africa, or for experienced riders seeking an adventure.
FAMILIES ON SAFARI
House in the Wild is wonderfully suited to families, with activities designed to engage children of all ages both on and off safari. Young guests can learn traditional Maasai skills and games, from jumping competitions and beadwork to trying a bow and arrow or learning how to milk cows. Around the lodge, there are lawns for badminton, volleyball and ping pong, as well as a swimming pool perfect for warm afternoons between activities. On safari, guides encourage curiosity and exploration, helping children connect with wildlife, nature and conservation in a fun and memorable way.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: GAME DRIVES
The conservancies surrounding House in the Wild offer exceptional wildlife viewing with very few other safari vehicles. Experienced guides know the Enonkishu, Lemek and Ol Chorro Oiruwa conservancies intimately, with big cats, elephants and plains game regularly seen just minutes from the lodge. More than 350 bird species have also been recorded in the area. Wildlife always takes priority here, with strict conservancy rules ensuring quiet, respectful sightings and no more than five vehicles at any encounter. Game drives take place in open-sided safari vehicles and can be tailored around guest interests and pace.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: GUIDED WALKS
Exploring the Mara on foot offers a completely different perspective on the landscape. Guided walks focus on the smaller details often missed from a vehicle, from animal tracks and bird calls to medicinal plants and the signs wildlife leaves behind. Walking through the conservancy with an experienced guide is a wonderfully immersive way to slow down, tune into the bush and experience the sights, sounds and scents of the African wilderness more intimately.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: E-BIKES
E-bike rides offer a fun and active way to explore the conservancy and surrounding communities. Cycle alongside giraffe and zebra through the Naretoi sanctuary, visit the Mara Training Centre to see local women creating beadwork, soaps and candles, or ride through nearby villages and farmland where children often run alongside with huge smiles and enthusiastic waves. The electric bikes make it easy to cover ground while still enjoying the slower pace and atmosphere of life in the Mara.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: CULTURAL VISITS
Cultural visits offer an authentic insight into everyday Maasai life and the communities surrounding the conservancy. Local Maasai guides may invite guests to visit their family homes or nearby Emarti Primary and Secondary Schools, where visitors are always warmly welcomed by the students and teachers. Evenings at the lodge are sometimes accompanied by traditional Maasai singing and dancing around the lawn at sunset, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere before dinner.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: VISITS TO THE MARA TRAINING CENTRE
Founded by Tarquin and Lippa Wood, the Mara Training Centre is a creative and educational hub focused on conservation, sustainability and community empowerment. Guests can learn about sustainable rangeland management and ongoing efforts to restore and protect the natural environment alongside local Maasai communities. Visits may include meeting the women behind Women in the Wild, where traditional beadwork, soap making, candle making and seed planting all take place. There is also the one-acre Wild Shamba vegetable garden, supplying fresh produce for the lodge kitchen and showcasing sustainable farming practices in the Mara.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: RHINO SANCTUARY
On the slopes of Kileleoni Hill in Ol Chorro Conservancy, guests have the rare opportunity to walk with white rhinos accompanied by experienced armed rangers. The sanctuary is home to two habituated but wild rhinos, Queen Elizabeth and Kofi Annan, who are protected and monitored around the clock. THE ACCOMMODATION
House in the Wild – Main Areas
House in the Wild feels intimate, relaxed and deeply connected to its surroundings. Set beside the Mara River in Kenya’s Enonkishu Conservancy, the lodge blends understated luxury with the warmth of a private home. Inside, the main lodge has comfortable sitting rooms filled with books, fireplaces and oversized sofas that invite you to slow down between safari activities. The indoor dining spaces feel elegant yet informal, while outside, guests drift between long lunches on the lawn, afternoons beside the swimming pool and evenings around the fire pit overlooking the river. There is a real sense of space here, with quiet corners to read, watch wildlife or simply switch off completely.
One Bedroom Cottages – River Cottage, Hippo Cottage, Olerai & Warburgia Cottage
The one-bedroom cottages are perfect for couples, solo travellers or small families wanting privacy and comfort in the heart of the Masai Mara. River Cottage and Hippo Cottage both offer spacious double bedrooms and peaceful verandas surrounded by nature, while Olerai is especially popular for its beautiful copper bathtub and romantic atmosphere. Warburgia Cottage includes a loft space for children, making it ideal for young families wanting a little extra flexibility. All cottages have generous bathrooms, thoughtful interiors and a relaxed luxury that feels elegant without ever being formal.
Family Units – The Original Cottage, Marula Cottage & Kisaru
The larger family cottages are wonderfully suited to families or friends travelling together on safari. The Original Cottage includes one double room and one twin room, making it a great option for families with children or mixed groups. Marula Cottage features two large double bedrooms with plenty of shared living space, while Kisaru offers two spacious double rooms and a lovely sense of privacy. These cottages are designed for longer, slower stays, where everyone can spread out comfortably between horseback safaris, wildlife experiences and quiet afternoons at the lodge.
THE DESTINATION
Enonkishu Conservancy, Ol Chorro Oiroua Conservancy & Lemek Conservancy
The Enonkishu, Ol Chorro and Lemek Conservancies form part of the quieter northern edge of the Masai Mara ecosystem and are at the heart of the House in the Wild safari experience. These wildlife-rich conservancies are known for their beautiful scenery, uncrowded game viewing and strong conservation initiatives working hand-in-hand with local Maasai communities. The area is home to elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and abundant plains game, with excellent year-round wildlife viewing away from the busier central reserve. The open landscapes, rolling grasslands and gentle terrain also make this one of the best areas in Kenya for horseback safaris, allowing riders to move quietly among wildlife while experiencing the Mara from a completely different perspective.
Mara North Conservancies
Bordering the Masai Mara Reserve, the Mara North Conservancies offer a quieter, more exclusive safari experience with lower vehicle numbers and a stronger focus on conservation and sustainable tourism. These privately managed conservancies work closely with local Maasai communities to protect wildlife habitat while creating meaningful benefits for the surrounding areas. The landscape is beautifully varied, with open plains, rolling hills, river systems and pockets of woodland attracting an incredible diversity of wildlife. Safari activities are also more flexible here than inside the main reserve, allowing guests to enjoy experiences such as horseback safaris, guided walks, night drives and off-road wildlife viewing in areas with far fewer vehicles.
Masai Mara National Park
The Masai Mara Park is Kenya’s most famous safari destination, known for its vast open plains, dramatic wildlife encounters and exceptional concentration of predators. This is classic East Africa with rolling grasslands dotted with acacia trees, herds of wildebeest and zebra stretching to the horizon, and some of the best chances in Africa to see lion, cheetah and leopard in the wild. The reserve forms part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem and plays host to the Great Migration between roughly July and October, when millions of wildebeest and zebra move through the Mara in search of fresh grazing. Wildlife viewing here is spectacular year-round, with elephants, buffalo, giraffe, hyena and abundant plains game all commonly seen.
HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES
Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at House in the Wild are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:
- The horses are in huge paddocks during the day, allowing them to live and interact as a herd. Often wildlife can be seen just outside the paddocks, with some friendly impala, warthogs and other wildlife often grazing alongside the horses. There is also an orphaned zebra who has become part of the herd
- At night, the horses sleep in an open barn, almost as beautiful as the lodge itself. The barn has no compartments or stalls, so the horses have complete freedom to wander through the barn, interact with the rest of the herd and sleep in comfort
- Twice a day they are fed, checked, groomed and temperatures taken by the devoted guides. The thoroughbreds and older horses get extra special care in the winter and are rugged, and given extra food
- The horses all get a physio and dentist visit at least once a year.
- The farrier comes every 6 weeks to shoe, and check the horses which are barefoot (they try to keep as many horses as possible barefoot)
- The tack is checked and cleaned regularly to ensure it is kept to the best possible standards
- A careful record is kept of how much work each horse does to ensure they have rest days and are not overworked
Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.
