EXCITING HORSE RIDING AND UNFORGETTABLE WILDLIFE IN THE OKAVANGO DELTA

Set near a deep pool in the Okavango Delta, Cha Cha Metsi promises thrilling riding and unforgettable wildlife viewing from the saddle, boat vehicle or on foot.

Cha Cha Metsi welcomes families, friends and adventure seekers looking to immerse themselves in the untamed beauty of the Okavango Delta. The Niven family, with three decades of exploration in this area, has crafted a haven for those seeking enduring connections with nature and the enchanting wildlife of Botswana. Working in partnership with David Foot and his team, the horse safaris here are unforgettable! And with a variety of activities, it’s a great option for non-riding partners or family members looking for an adventure.

As one of the newest lodges in the region, what sets it apart is it’s location next to a permanent lagoon, which offers mokoro (canoe) safaris year round. The indigenous name of the lagoon, “Gama tau” means gathering place of lions, and you’ll often hear them roaring in the evenings. The concession, offers some exciting game viewing, with a large population of resident elephants, leopards and lions. There is also an abundance of buffalo, giraffes, zebra, and a host of other wildlife typical of this area of the Okavango Delta.

Horse riding in the Delta is something special, with phenomenal game viewing from the saddle.  The terrain is varied, from flood plains and open pans systems lined with Fan Palm trees, to the riverine forests with ancient trees on to a myriad of waterways and floodplains. Riding safaris take you off the beaten path, where vehicles cannot reach and offer some incredible wildlife moments from the saddle. And of course, during the flood season, there’s sometimes the chance for splashy canters that will leave you grinning from ear to ear!

For non-riding guests, or when you want a break from the saddle, there is a variety of activities, all offering a unique perspective to the Delta. Head out on early mornings and sunset drives in specialised 4x4s. Enjoy leisurely mokoro safaris along the scenic waterways with the local community or head out on a walking safari with an armed guide. Plus, between activities, guests can relax on the spacious deck, overlooking the lagoon, where you might get some fantastic “arm-chair” safaris when elephants and other wildlife come to the waterhole to drink.

Built under a cool Leadwood and Knob-Thorn forest canopy, all the tents offer picturesque water views. Guests can also spend time in the living space adorned with family heirlooms and personal touches. Throughout the lodge, black-and-white family safari pictures adorn the walls, telling the story of a proud legacy, unashamedly nostalgic, refined, and ready to be shared with guests seeking an unforgettable African experience.

TOUR REVIEWS

The Okavango Delta surpassed all of my expectations - a huge thank you to Hope for finding me a spot at Cha Cha Metsi. The camp was stunningly put together with an incredible team on the ground - Clyde, Willi and Kim to name a few. From the first moment of stepping foot on camp you’re made to feel so welcomed and at home - which is important as a solo traveller. I will never forget cantering through the water with a herd of Zebra on one side and Giraffe galloping on the other. I rode Ghost Wind the whole trip and he was the calmest, cutest, most responsive horse you could imagine. Flood and Thebs were knowledgeable guides and importantly put up with 5 very chatty women with strong opinions on the importance of splashy canters!

SAMPLE ITINERARY

For lodge stays, guests have the opportunity to enjoy various activities during their stay. Depending on arrival time, you’ll have afternoon tea or a delicious lunch while the team gives you a briefing on the next few days of adventures. They will talk you through the normal daily routine on safari, what to expect while you’re riding as well as the other activities at the lodge. Your stay is completely tailor-made and you can plan your stay depending on your interests, the weather and wildlife movements.

Morning activities tend to be a bit longer, and if you choose to ride, these rides will often be a bit faster paced. Afternoon activities tend to be shorter and more relaxed, most often ending with sundowner drinks overlooking the floodplains.

A TYPICAL DAY ON SAFARI

06h30:  The day at Cha Cha Metsi starts early with the rising of the sun. You’ll be woken up with a steaming cup of coffee or tea as you get ready for the adventure ahead. A snack and refreshments are served before embarking on a game drive or mounting up for your morning ride.

11h30-12h30: Once back at Camp you’ll enjoy a delicious brunch with a variety of some mouth-watering options. For the energetic you are welcome to head out on a walking safari with a trained guide to experience an intimate close up look at the Delta. For those looking to relax, an afternoon nap might be just the thing!

15h30: Gather in the lounge for afternoon tea. Then either mount up or hop in the vehicle for an evening game drive to take in the breathtaking sunset

18h00 – 19h00: Enjoy some of Africa’s most incredible sunsets! On the way home, you might spot some of the nocturnal wildlife, and predators as they come out to prowl

19h30 – 22h00: Get back to camp in time to freshen up, before walking down to the boma to enjoy drinks around the campfire. Then tuck into a 3 course dinner, celebrating some local African Cuisine. When you’re ready, your guide will walk you back to your tent, fall asleep to the sound of the hippos wallowing in the river below.

HORSE RIDING

The stables are run by David Foot and his team from Ride Botswana. With over 32 years of guiding in Malawi and Botswana, his team of guides is phenomenal. Riding safaris are for intermediate plus riders or above, as you’ll be riding in areas where you’re likely to see elephants, buffalo and even big cats. The riding varies from relaxed walks through the bush to lovely long canters along the elephant paths. If the guides feel that riders are not experienced enough to ride safely in this area, you’ll be asked to do game drives, or walks instead.

GAME DRIVES

Head out on game drives in custom made land open land cruisers. Generally these head out in the early morning, or late afternoon, ensuring the best wildlife viewing. Follow the sandy tracks across the islands, and drive across wooden bridges that span over the deeper water channels. The habitats vary, and there is a huge diversity of wildlife. At Cha Cha you will see elephants, zebras, buffalos, hippos, wildebeest, and impalas, along with red lechwe waterbuck on almost all of the game drives. This area is also very well known for predators, and Lion Island often lives up to its name.

MOKORO SAFARIS

Enjoy a traditional dugout canoe safari, on the beautiful waterways with experienced local community pollers. Here you will be immersed into the water sanctuary in front of the camp. Enjoy a relaxing slow paddle through the lilies and across the channels, taking in the smaller creatures such as the colourful painted frogs, emerald and ruby dragonflies and chirping grasshoppers. Glid through the water taking in the sights of the bee eaters flying overhead, and hear the call of the fish eagles as they call from the ancient leadwood trees. On the water, you will see all sorts of wildlife, including the odd elephant in the water and hippos from afar.

WALKING SAFARIS

The guides are trained specifically for walking safaris in the wild, keeping you safe and close at all times. Walking allows you to slow down and take in the smaller things. It also gets you close to the wildlife, with the guides showing you the secrets to tracking wildlife and following the small signs that often get overlooked. The walk meanders through open grasslands, past the rivers edge and through areas where wildlife frequent.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Ride Botswana  are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • The horses get 2 to 3 meals a day, plus plenty of grass to eat as they wish
  • The grooms check temperatures daily when they groom the horses to make sure they are all healthy and to pick up any injuries they may have sustained out on trail or in the bush.
  • Saddles are checked regularly and tack cleaned daily
  • The farrier sees the horses every five weeks
  • Horses have dedicated rest days each week and are on holiday 2 months per year
  • Our horses live out in a herd environment, allowing them to live as naturally as possible once they have carried you home safely.
  • There is a large stable area with a boma around it where the horses spend the night, and there is a night watchman to ensure their safety.
  • Guides and grooms have taken part in natural horsemanship clinics to gain a better understanding on horse behaviour and how to work with them in a respectful way.
  • Retired safari horses still get the same care as all the other horses and live a life of freedom

Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.
