How We Choose the Horse Safari Operators We Work With
A reputable horse safari company is hard to spot from a website alone. Professional photos and strong reviews are easy to produce. Almost every operator manages both. What actually separates a safe, honest operation from one that’s just good at marketing takes more digging than a scroll through Instagram. At African Horse Safaris, we do all that research before a ride ever goes on our site. We visit the lodges. We meet the guides. We ride the horses ourselves. And we ask hard questions about how those horses live, work and rest when nobody’s watching. This isn’t a checklist you need to run yourself. It’s the process behind every ride we recommend, so that when you book through us, you get our honest answer, not a brochure’s.
Horse Care in Africa – The Safari Horses are at the heart of everything we do
What We Actually Look For in a Reputable Horse Safari Company
When we choose the horse safari operators we work with, we’re looking at far more than beautiful photos. We personally visit the rides and spend time with the horses, guides and teams on the ground. Our team has ridden every single ride we currently sell. That means we can describe it honestly, rather than repeating what’s in a brochure. Three things get checked every time.
The horses and how they are cared for
Horse welfare is probably the biggest part of the equation. The horses are at the heart of everything we do, so we simply won’t work with an operator who doesn’t feel the same way. We want to see how the horses live when they’re not working, how often they’re ridden, and whether they’re getting the rest and downtime they need. We look at their overall condition, their tack, feeding and veterinary care, but also the smaller things that tell you a lot when you know horses. And when it comes to matching horses and riders, we’re looking for more than whoever happens to be available that morning. A good horse and rider pairing can make or break a riding holiday. That kind of matching is exactly what our guide to which horse safari is right for you is built around.
The Guiding and the Experience
Good horses with a poor guide can still make for a disappointing week. The guide is a huge part of the experience, so we want to know that they really understand the horses, the wildlife and the environment they’re riding in. We look at the quality of the guiding, the routes themselves and, most importantly, whether the experience actually delivers what it promises. Having met most of the guides personally, we know you’re in great hands. Not only are they expert horsemen who keep you safe, but they’re also like walking encyclopedias of the bush and will spot wildlife long before you would. Seeing elephants or big cats from horseback is one of the most incredible things you can experience.
The Camps and Lodges
Then there’s the place you come home to at the end of the day. Most of the camps and lodges we work with are small, family-run places where things are kept intimate and personal. You’re not arriving at a large hotel; you’re staying somewhere where people know your name, remember your horse, and genuinely care how your day went.
A beautiful camp or lodge can add so much to a riding holiday, but it needs to feel special for the right reasons. We’re looking for places with character, warm hospitality and a real sense of place, rather than somewhere that’s simply been designed to look good in photographs. We know the difference because we’ve stayed in these places ourselves, and that first-hand experience is a big part of why we can recommend them with confidence.
The horses are at the heart of everything we do at African Horse Safaris, so their welfare is always our starting point when choosing an operator. We personally visit, ride and assess every safari we sell, looking closely at how the horses live, work and rest. In fact, we often joke that some of our horses are better cared for than our guests, and that’s pretty hard to beat!
Why We Revisit, Not Just Review, Every Operator
We’re pretty particular about who we work with. We want to recommend a ride with complete confidence, not cross our fingers. Our team has been in the horse safari industry for more than ten years. In that time, we’ve built real relationships with the people who run these operations. We know our operators by first name. We speak to many of them almost more often than we speak to most of our friends, and we visit in person, generally at least every two years.
Those relationships showed up in an incredible way at our tenth anniversary. Most of the operators we work with flew in to celebrate with us. It turned into one of the best parties we’ve thrown, with most of us getting home in the early hours of the morning. That isn’t something you get from a company that only emails an operator when a client’s about to book.
Horse Welfare: What We Check Every Time
Horse welfare isn’t a box we tick once and forget. At some of the operations we trust most, horses live out year-round in herds. They graze freely alongside giraffe, zebra, antelope, and occasionally rhino or buffalo. At many of the South African operators we work with, around 100 horses come charging into the paddocks every evening on their own. They’re right on time for dinner and a bit of attention, and it’s something really magical to watch!
Behind that ease is careful management. Workloads are recorded so horses get proper rest, alongside regular veterinary, dental, physio and farrier care. Older horses and thoroughbreds often need extra attention through winter. We look for teams who know which horse is sensible around elephants, which one loves a good canter, and which one suits a nervous rider. That knowledge is what keeps both horse and rider safe and happy.
On every ride page on our porfolio, you can see how the horses are cared for, but you’re always welcome to ask us more!
Why We Ride Every Route Ourselves
Every member of our team rides and many of us own horses (including the cutest mini who is fast becoming a mascot!). Between us, we’ve ridden every safari we currently sell and we often go back with friends and family. Most of us live in South Africa, or have spent many years here, so it’s safe to say we know what we’re talking about. Isabel, who leads our team, recently moved back to the UK. She’d spent almost seven years across Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana before that. Our office is based in Cape Town, and most of the team is from here. We’ve all travelled around Africa extensively, and love getting as many people as addicted to riding in Africa as we are.
That matters. When you’ve ridden a route yourself, met the horses and spent real time with the people running it, you can give a far more honest answer than a brochure ever could. We can tell you honestly when a ride isn’t the right fit for a nervous rider. We can tell you when a route that looks incredible in photos is actually a long, hot day in the saddle. And we can honestly tell you which rides have the fastest gallops since most of us are slightly addicted to speed!
Is It Worth Booking Through a Safari Specialist?
It’s a fair question, especially when you could, in theory, contact operators directly yourself. Booking through us costs no more than booking direct. The price is the same either way. What you get instead is someone who has actually ridden the trips and checked the horses. Someone who can point you to the right one for your riding level and what you’re after.
We don’t push one ride over another, because we’re not paid more to recommend any particular operator. Our advice is genuinely unbiased. That’s exactly why clients come back to us for their next trip, and the one after that. Read more in why book with a specialist, or see what past guests have said in our reviews.
Common Concerns We Hear
“Couldn’t the reviews just be fake?”
They could be, on some sites. That’s exactly why we don’t rely on reviews alone. We’ve physically visited the lodge, ridden the horses and met the guides ourselves. Our recommendation isn’t second-hand.
“What if the trip doesn’t match what I expected?”
This is the single biggest reason a booking goes wrong. It’s rarely the operator’s fault. It’s almost always a mismatch between what a rider expected and what the ride actually involves. That’s why we ask detailed questions about riding ability and expectations before we recommend anything, not after you’ve booked.
“Do you get paid more to recommend certain operators?”
No. We charge the same whether you book with us or go direct, and we’re not incentivised to push one ride over another. Our advice only holds up if it’s honest.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you choose the horse safari operators you work with?
We look beyond the website and marketing. Our team personally visits the rides, meets the people running them, spends time with the horses and rides the routes ourselves. We look at horse welfare, guiding, accommodation, safety and the overall experience before deciding whether an operator is one we can confidently recommend.
Do you personally visit and ride the horse safaris you sell?
Yes. Between our team, we have ridden every safari we currently sell. Many of us have also returned to the same operators several times over the years. This means we can give you first-hand advice about the horses, riding, wildlife, guides, accommodation and what the experience is really like.
How do you check that the horses are well cared for?
Horse welfare is one of the most important things we look at. We spend time seeing how horses live when they’re not working, how often they work and rest, and what their general condition is like. We also look at their tack, feeding, veterinary, dental, physio and farrier care, as well as how carefully horses are matched to individual riders.
How do you know which horse safari is right for each rider?
It’s about much more than riding ability. We consider your experience, confidence, riding style, what you want from the trip and how comfortable you are around wildlife. Because our team has ridden the safaris ourselves, we can tell you honestly which rides are relaxed and easy-going, which involve challenging terrain or long days in the saddle, and which are best suited to experienced riders looking for more adventure.
Is it better to book a horse safari through a specialist?
If you know exactly what you want and have already found the right operator, you can certainly book direct. But a specialist can save you a lot of research and help you avoid choosing a ride that looks perfect online but isn’t actually the right fit. At African Horse Safaris, booking through us costs the same as booking direct, and you get the benefit of our first-hand experience, independent advice and knowledge of the operators we work with.
