FIND YOUR HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME ON THIS UNIQUE LAIKIPIA HORSE SAFARI

Embrace adventure at this wonderful lodge-based horse safari in Kenya. An unforgettable journey for riders and non-riders alike with a variety of unforgettable safari experiences.

Located in the peaceful heart of Laikipia, an area with the second largest population of elephants and untamed wilderness, Sosian Lodge is the ideal camp for equestrian travellers who want to experience an authentic and intimate horse safari away from the crowds and usual tourist routes. Being a 24,000 acre wildlife ranch, Sosian Lodge prides themselves on managing a unique blend of eco-tourism, conservation and traditional cattle ranching in Laikipia’s highlands. With many years of making conservation a priority, the wildlife on Sosian has flourished.

This area has a diverse cross section of habitats, from open plains, to dense woodland forests, and a winding river that is home to pods of hippos. The northern grassy plains are home to wildlife such as oryx, gazelle, zebra, ostrich and cheetah, whilst the southern end of the conservancy, full of acacia woodland, is home to elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard and wild dog.  On safari at Sosian, you’re sure to see rare species such as Jackson’s hartebeest, Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe.  Laikipia also boasts the second highest population of elephant in Kenya, with around 6000 resident in the area. It’s not uncommon to see herds in their hundreds form horseback, game drive or on foot. Wildlife viewing is rewarding, whilst still maintaining the true wilderness of this area which makes each sighting all the more special and exciting.

The original ranch house was built in the 1940’s by Italian artisans and has been beautifully restored to accommodate up to 14 people. They are known for the huge array of safari expereinces on offer. Whether you are cantering through the bush grinning from ear to ear, creeping up to a herd of elephants on foot, on a leisurely (or hardcore!) morning cycle, or tracking big cats from the vehicle – You will fall in love with the magic of Sosian. Fly camping under the stars is also available for those wanting a unique experience and we highly recommend it!

This is an ideal safari experience for solo travellers, couples, groups of friends or families. It offers fun and fast riding for experienced equestrians, plus an extensive list of other safari activities for non-riders. The Ranch lies at an altitude of 5500ft, which makes for a perfect climate year round, with no record of malaria.

TOUR REVIEWS

This place is heaven on earth. We travelled with our teenage kids (aged 13 and 17) and my mum, aged 71. Cassia, Darren and Emma are the most exceptional hosts. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is wonderful, the activities amongst the most memorable we’ve ever done. Horse riding with zebra, camel trekking, safari drives, camping in luxury, safari breakfast, swimming, waterfall jumping, bike riding and running. It was all utterly perfect and more than we could ever have wished for. Memories like these last a lifetime and we are so grateful to the whole team including John and Gabriel (and others) who were our fabulous safari guides. We felt so well looked after and cared for. Highly recommend. Thanks to the team.

SAMPLE ITINERARY / WHAT TO EXPECT

There is no fixed itinerary for holidays at Sosian Lodge. We would recommend spending at least 3 nights here, giving you the chance to explore the area and all the incredible safari expereinces. Should you wish to do cultural activities or visit the waterfall and river, we recommend 5 or more nights.

You will have the option of a morning and afternoon activity. This can be riding, walking, cycling, game driving or any of the other activities available. The morning rides tend to be longer and the afternoon rides shorter but they are extremely flexible in tailoring everything to your needs and bucket list.

A TYPICAL DAY

There is no set itinerary during your safari and you can choose which activities you’d like to do. Non-riders can do game drives while riders head out on the trail. While vehicles cannot go as far off the beaten track, all guests will get a phenomenal safari experience with incredible guides.

Wake-up on a beautiful African morning, to the sound of the dawn chorus. Enjoy a light breakfast as dawn breaks. The morning will be spent on your chosen activity whether it’s on horseback or game drive vehicle, you will follow the ancient elephant trails, searching for a variety of wildlife.

Sosian offers a great variety of riding across open plains filled with zebra, oryx, giraffe, eland and gazelle, stretching down into thicker valleys, which are home to herds of kudu, buffalo and elephants. There is also a stretch of river where you’ll often spot pods of hippos, and the not-so-elusive leopard. Riding is generally 2-3 hours in the mornings and/or afternoons and riders can spend up to 6 hours per day in the saddle. Often you’ll ride to bush breakfasts or sundowners, which seem to appear out of nowhere as you turn a corner on a particularly beautiful stretch of the river or reach the top of a breathtaking escarpment.

Return to the lodge for lunch and siesta. In the afternoons, head out on a gentle evening ride, a sundowner game drive or afternoon walk, absorbing Laikipia’s magic and listening to the sounds of the bush. Enjoy Africa’s ‘golden hour’, where the wonderful afternoon light sets the landscape alight with beautiful colours. Return to camp for a delicious alfresco dinner under the stars or in the main dining area. The food produced is absolutely delicious.

Occasionally riding guests (and horses) may need to rest, which is the perfect opportunity to venture out on foot to appreciate the smaller creatures that inhabit the bush – or to learn some rudimentary tracking skills. Other activities include game drives, camel treks or learning more about cattle ranching in the wilds of Kenya. For those who wish to immerse themselves in the Kenyan culture, you may visit some of the nomadic tribes that welcome guests into their homes. And for the adventurous, you can head to teh Ewaso Narock River from swimming, tubing or kayaking. No two days are the same and every day is a different adventure in this piece of Africa paradise.

FLY CAMPING WITH THE HORSES

For the keener riders we can offer a 1-night fly camp with the horses. Leaving the lodge after lunch we ride approximately three hours north, exploring the rivers and escarpments along the way, arriving at our fly camp that evening, in time for a sundowner. With simple tents, a long drop loo and a traditional hot safari shower, guests can settle in for the night with a bush dinner and then fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush. There is a second stable block up on these northern plains where the horses spend the night. The following morning you’ll get up early, have some tea and then head out across the plains on the horses. Riding back southwards towards the lodge, you’ll stop for a bush breakfast before riding back into the lodge in time for lunch at the pool and a chance to cool off after the long morning’s ride.

5 - 7 TAILOR-MADE HORSE TRAILS

With prior arrangement, we also offer longer riding safaris from Sosian. There are three other lodges and camps within a half day ride from Sosian and riding out to these properties is a fantastic way to see more of the area and sample some different lodges. Starting and ending at Sosian, our horses become our transport and together with our team of grooms and guides we can offer a really exhilarating riding safari experience, with plenty of wildlife and excellent riding. We can give you more information on this if this is something you would like.

GAME DRIVES

Games drives at Sosian are in open 4×4 Land Rovers with specially raised seats to allow the best wildlife viewing. Early mornings and later afternoons are the best times to go, as the wildlife is more active when its cooler. However, the middle of the day can be a wonderful time to find herds of elephant playing in the mud and cooling off in the river.

Sosian has a diverse landscape and varying habitats, where you can expect to see elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, zebra, antelope, lion, leopard and warthog to name a few. There is also over 350 species of birds on Sosian. Being a private conservancy guests are also fortunate enough to be able to experience the bush and its nocturnal animals with a spot light at night. After sunset guests often encounter leopard, spotted and striped hyena, aardwolf, aardvark, porcupine, bush baby, serval cat and other exciting species.

WALKING SAFARIS

Walking is the most intimate way of exploring the bush. Led by an experienced walking guide you will learn how to follow animal tracks, recognise dung, insects, flora & fauna and all the other tiny details that you might otherwise miss from a vehicle. You don’t have to be super fit to enjoy one of our walking safari experiences and our guides will tailor make it to suit your preferences.

CYCLING

For those who prefer a different type of saddle, mountain biking is a must. Sosian has a range of bikes available. You must be relatively fit and confident with off-road bike riding, but you’ll be rewarded with exceptional views! The hills and valleys provide the perfect terrain for adrenalin-fuelled bike rides.

RIVER ACTIVITIES

Sosian is lucky to have 15km of the Ewaso Narok River running through it, with its magnificent 30ft high waterfalls. A highlight for some (who are brave enough!) is to jump off the waterfalls into the deep pool below. For others, swimming in the pools, or paddling in a kayak is most enjoyable. When the river is high enough, tubing down the rapids is another exhilarating way to spend the day on the river….or simply relax on the river bank with a fishing rod and see what you can catch for your dinner!

CAMEL TREKKING

Camels have been part of the northern Kenyan landscape for hundreds of years and are kept as livestock for their milk and meat. Contrary to popular belief, if well looked after, camels can be very well tempered. Sosian’s camels are very friendly and at times overly affectionate! Camel riding is a fun activity and typically a ride lasts approximately 40 minutes or so, and allows you to see the bush from a great vantage point.

CULTURAL VISITS

Camels have been part of the northern Kenyan landscape for hundreds of years and are kept as livestock for their milk and meat. Contrary to popular belief, if well looked after, camels can be very well temperAed. Sosian’s camels are very friendly and at times overly affectionate! Camel riding is a fun activity and typically a ride lasts approximately 40 minutes or so, and allows you to see the bush from a great vantage point.

RANCHING ACTIVITIES

Cattle ranching in Laikipia is a long standing land use that is vitally important for the sustainability of this semi-arid area. When managed carefully, cattle ranching and wildlife conservation compliment each other and Sosian is a perfect example of how this can work. A morning spent with the ranch manager can offer a fascinating insight into how cattle and wildlife co-exist and also provide a fun and often hands on farming experience for all the family.

THE ACCOMMODATION

SOSIAN LODGE

Sosian is an elegant yet informal lodge offering a friendly home-from-home atmosphere. The original ranch house is the centre piece, made up of a large sitting room, dining room, bar and billiards room, with an expansive wrap around veranda, offering undisturbed views of the bush beyond. The beautiful swimming pool and pool house provide welcome refreshment after a day out in the bush. Lunch is often laid out under the cool thatch roof and it’s a great spot for an evening BBQ. And for those with extra energy, a ‘Kenya style’ tennis court has held many a fine tournament!

ITALIAN COTTAGE

The Italian Cottage, so called having been built by Italian artisans post-war, is set apart from the other cottages, with its own private garden. The large bedroom with a king-size double bed and the airy en suite bathroom offers the ultimate comfort and privacy you’d expect from a  luxury safari lodge.

FAMILY COTTAGE – INTERCONNECTING ROOMS

The Family Cottage is perfect for the younger families as the double and triple rooms interconnect, giving peace of mind to parents and children. Both rooms have their own bathrooms, one with a bath tub and the other with a shower, to keep the whole family happy.

GARDEN COTTAGES

The remaining 4 cottages each consist of a double room and a twin room each, making up 8 en-suite rooms in total. Each cottage has their own veranda overlooking the gardens, where your morning tea or coffee is laid out or where you can relax in the heat of the day.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses in Kenya are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. The horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • Tack is fitted before each ride and regularly checked to ensure comfort
  • The horses well-being is checked morning and evening and monitored throughout the day on Safari
  • The horses get 2-4 meals a day, depending on their needs, condidtion and training schedule
  • They live out in a herd environment, coming into the stables at night for feeding, grooming and handling
  • There are dedicated rest days and a varied training schedule including ground work, pole work and trail rides to keep the horses fit and responsive
  • Guides carry veterinary supplies in saddle bags at all times and all grooms are trained with basic veterinary practices such as stitching, bandaging and injecting
  • On trail, the horses are tied up on picket line at night and there are 2 night watchmen who stay up all night with the herd to ensure their safety
