Discover Laikipia on an Authentic Horseback Safari
Explore unspoilt Laikipia and Lolldaiga on horseback, combining lodge comfort at Rocky Hollow with an adventurous mobile safari.
This ride combines the best of both worlds, the comfort and character of a stay at Rocky Hollow with the thrill of a multi-day horse safari through the wild landscapes of the Lolldaiga Hills. It’s the kind of journey that reminds you why you fell in love with Africa in the first place, raw, beautiful, and full of those unscripted moments that only happen when you ride off the map.
Your adventure begins at Rocky Hollow, a warm and colourful stone-built home tucked between rocky kopjes and sand rivers. Hosted by Charlie and Mouse, it’s a place that instantly feels like visiting old friends, the kind who know every horse by name and every trail by heart. Days start with strong coffee and views towards Mount Kenya, followed by exhilarating rides through acacia woodlands and open plains where elephants, zebra, and gerenuk wander freely. Evenings are spent gathered around the fire, swapping stories beneath a sky full of stars.
Once you’ve found your rhythm, the ride expands into the Lolldaiga Hills, an ancient, wildlife-rich area where you’ll camp in remote spots, waking each morning to the call of birds and the smell of woodsmoke. This mobile safari is for confident riders who love the adventure of moving between wild camps, discovering new terrain each day, and being surrounded by wildlife without the crowds. The horses are forward-going, responsive, and sure-footed, bred for long days and challenging terrain.
It’s not luxury in the traditional sense, but it’s rich in everything that matters: wide horizons, untamed beauty, and a real connection to Kenya’s people, landscapes, and wildlife.
QUICK FACTS
SAMPLE ITINERARY / WHAT TO EXPECT
Please note that this itinerary is a guide only and may be subject to change. Camping will take place in one of the reserves, Lolldaiga, Cholo, or Tumeran, depending on wildlife movements, weather, and other factors. All activities and ride routes are flexible to ensure the best possible safari experience.
DAY 1 - ARRIVE AT ROCKY HOLLOW
Arrive in Nairobi and either take a light aircraft to Nanyuki, followed by a short transfer, or enjoy a 5–6 hour scenic drive through Kenya’s highlands. Leave the asphalt behind as you approach Rocky Hollow, where rugged valleys and rocky kopjes welcome you. Meet Charlie and Mouse, your hosts, and get acquainted with the horses. If time allows, enjoy a short ride, or simply stroll around the gardens and watch the horses settle in for dinner. Drinks in the lounge and dinner in the dining room round off your first evening in the bush.
DAY 2 - MORNING RIDE & AFTERNOON WALK
Wake up to warm tea brought to your room before heading to the verandah to enjoy breakfast. Then head out for a ride along sandy riverbeds, winding trails, and open plains, spotting zebra, giraffe, antelope, and sometimes elephants. Canters along the airstrip and across open terrain give a taste of Laikipia’s exhilarating riding. In the afternoon, join Charlie on a guided walk through the riverbeds up to a ridge overlooking the reserve. Watch the sunset from this stunning viewpoint or wander back to the lodge. Keep an eye out for hyrax, birds, and lizards, while the outline of Mount Kenya looms on a clear day. Evening drinks in the lounge and dinner under the stars complete the day.
DAY 3 - RIDE TO MOBILE CAMP
After breakfast, saddle up for your first mobile camp ride to Lolldaiga, Chololo, or Tumeran Conservancies, depending on wildlife and conditions. Arrive to find your camp already set up by the crew, complete with cool drinks. Then it’s time to unsaddle and pat down your horse, before they are tied to the picket line. Lunch is served either in the mess tent or under the trees. In the afternoon, hop in a 4×4 for a game drive with the roof open, scanning the plains for elephants, zebra, giraffe, and maybe even lions or leopards. Sundowners in the bush finish a memorable day.
DAY 4 - MORNING RIDE & GAME DRIVE
Start the day with a morning ride across Lolldaiga’s open plains, through lightly wooded hills, and along red-earth valleys. The trails offer a mix of fast canters and gentle walks, with excellent opportunities to spot wildlife from the saddle such as elephants, giraffe, zebra, and antelope. In the afternoon, join a game drive in a 4×4 with the roof open for panoramic views and a chance to search for lions, leopards, and cheetah. The day finishes around the campfire with sundowners under a star-strewn sky, sharing stories of the day’s encounters.
RIDE TO SECOND CAMP
Saddle up for a full-day ride to a new mobile camp, riding through a mix of open grasslands, dense forests, and rocky kopjes. Trails wind past dams, riverbeds, and red-earth tracks, perfect for cantering and spotting wildlife along the way. Elephants often drink at waterholes, while giraffe, zebra, warthog, and antelope roam the plains. Stop for a bush lunch in the shade of acacias before continuing to camp. Afternoon allows for a gentle walk or quiet wildlife watching as the sun sets over the horizon. This day is a highlight for riders seeking adventure across varied Laikipia terrain.
DAY 6 - RETURN TO ROCKY HOLLOW
Morning ride takes you to the reserve gate with a stop for bush breakfast overlooking Laikipia’s rolling valleys or next to the dam. Depending on the weather, wildlife and riders fitness, you’ll have chosen whether you want a full day ride, or would prefer to drive back to Rocky Hollow. If you ride, you’ll have a long, scenic ride back through neighbouring reserves, farms, and villages, spotting wildlife along the way. Elephants, zebra, giraffe, and antelope are common sights, while the mix of terrain keeps the ride varied and exciting. If the group has chosen to drive, then the horses will be loaded in the horsebox and driven back home again. Back at Rocky Hollow, relax with afternoon tea and a game of croquette in the gardens, a fun (or competative) way to celebrate the day’s adventure. Dinner will be served either in the dining room or in the garden.
VISIT THE HABITUATED BABOONS
It’s an early morning start as you ride out for a bush breakfast set up under the trees. The horses will be tied up on the picket line as you enjoy Kenyan tea and coffee and a selection of hot and cold breakfast treats. On the way home, indulge in some fast canters along the airstrip, test cross-country jumps, and explore scenic trails around the lodge. You’ll have some time to relax before your afternoon activity. Just a short drive from the lodge, the Baboon Research Project is a fascinating look into the behaviour and social structure of habituated troops of wild baboons. You’ll spend a memorable couple of hours walking with the baboons and the scientists studying them. The team is always happy to answer any questions you might have on these animals and they know each indiviual by name. It’s a unique and educational experience that few travellers ever get to see. Watching their interactions up close gives a whole new appreciation for Laikipia’s wildlife.

THE ACCOMMODATION
Rocky Hollow
Built over the course of seven years, the house was given time to evolve naturally, and today it carries the charm and character of a much older home. Designed to feel more like a welcoming residence than a hotel, no two bedrooms are alike. Each has its own unique personality, and in some cases, a distinctive feature. What they all share are large windows, high ceilings, full privacy, and en-suite bathrooms – most with bathtubs. When not out exploring on foot or horseback, guests can retreat to one of several cosy rooms with a book and a drink. But during the heat of the day, the breezy and shaded verandah is the perfect place to unwind, and where lunch is most often enjoyed.
The Bedrooms
Seven en-suite bedrooms are available for guests with five doubles and two twins. These are arranged in a loose circle around the gardens. Each room offers sweeping views of the distant hills and closer glimpses of the valley below, where you might spot a browsing dik-dik or impala. The area in front of the house remains unfenced, allowing wildlife to move freely and adding to the sense of wild tranquillity. The rooms are allocated depending on the number of guests staying at the lodge, but each one is unqiuely furnished.Â
Mobile Camping
The mobile camps are set up in remote, wild areas of Lolldaiga or surrounding reserves, allowing guests to end each day fully immersed in the Kenyan bush. After several hours in the saddle, riding into camp to find your tent already waiting is a simple, glorious pleasure. Guests can sink into a comfortable canvas chair under a shady acacia, enjoy a cold drink, and watch the world settle around them. Meals are served in the mess tent or more often beneath the trees or a sky full of stars, adding to the magic of the bush. It’s simple, comfortable, and completely immersed in the rhythms of the Kenyan wilderness.
The Tents
Each spacious canvas tent has twin or double beds and offers a quiet retreat after a long day riding. Outside the tent, a washstand with warm water and a pair of chairs allows guests to enjoy some private time. For every two tents, there is a short-drop toilet and a bucket shower, with water heated on the fire by the attentive camp crew. Simple yet comfortable, the tents offer a real sense of bush life without sacrificing the essentials.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES
Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Ol Malo are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on the top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:
- There are around 15 horses at Rocky Hollow, all personally trained by Charlie and Mouse to ensure that they are level headed when out in the bush.
- New horses are introduced slowly, and since they see wildlife roaming around the house and paddocks, they quickly become accustomed to seeing animals such as giraffe, zebra and even elephants
- Care is taken to match horse and rider
- The horses have a schedule with dedicated rest days as well as schooling to keep them fit and responsive while out on trail
- The horses are fed breakfast and supper, with as much grazing during the day as possible. Some horses will get lunch as well, depending on their dietary needs
- During the day, they are free to as a herd, and in the evenings they stabled to keep them safe from predators
- The horses are groomed and vetted daily by a dedicated small team, with Mouse and Charlie being very hands on
- The tack is well fitted an cleaned after every ride
