SET OFF ON A LUXURY TRAIL RIDE IN THE HEART OF LAIKIPIA

Embark on an unforgettable equine adventure like no other, spanning the heart of Africa. This extraordinary journey promises an exhilarating fusion of equestrian adventure, luxury accommodation and breathtaking landscapes!

Your horseback odyssey begins at Borana Lodge, nestled in the stunning Laikipia Plateau of Kenya. Imagine galloping across the vast plains alongside herds of majestic wildlife or riding along the ancient elephant paths where few humans have ever ventured. On your horse riding holiday, you can also experience game drives, guided bush walks, and night safaris, allowing you to witness wildlife in their natural habitat.  We also encourage all guests to join the team of Borana Conservancy rangers as they track rhino on foot. This is a wonderful experience which gives a true ‘behind the scenes’ view into how a successful rhino conservancy is run. Between adventures, indulge yourself at the lodge, where you can read, watch the wildlife go by from your private deck, or enjoy the pool, an ideal place to cool down and escape the midday heat.  Meals are always an experience, whether it is a surprise bush breakfast, picnic lunch or 3 course meal under the stars, you can  savor gourmet cuisine inspired by local flavors.

Break up your journey with a mesmerizing fly-camp experience, immersing yourself in the untamed wilderness. Underneath the glittering African skies, sleep in cozy tents, serenaded by the sounds of nocturnal creatures. Share stories around the campfire, stargaze, and wake up to the dawn chorus of the bush. It’s an intimate connection with nature that few get to experience.

Your expedition continues to Lewa Wilderness Lodge, an eco-conscious haven nestled within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Here, horseback safaris unveil the magic of Africa’s most iconic creatures, with guides who share their intimate knowledge of the land. When not exploring on horseback, enjoy game drives, camel treks, and scenic flights over Mount Kenya. As the sun sets, unwind on your private veranda, taking in panoramic views of the majestic landscape. There are 6 thatched hillside cottages, where you will feel like you are the only people for miles around. A further 3 garden cottages are set amongst the brilliant green lawns, rich with rustic charm and handmade furniture, these ranch-style rooms are and idyllic escape.

There are no set dates for this safari, and we can take groups of 2 – 8 riders, allowing you to have the ultimate trail ride in Kenya. Your daily schedule can be tailored to what you wish to experience, and can include a variety of incredible wildlife, conservation and cultural experiences.  With a focus on luxury adventure travel and conservation, it’s an unforgettable safari. Many guests also choose to add on a safari in the Masai Mara or some time on the Kenyan Coast or Zanzibar. We can put together a tailor-made package for you, and your safari specialist can help you plan the ultimate African adventure.

TOUR REVIEWS

We had such an amazing week riding at Borana lodge in Kenya in August!! The lodge is stunning, we loved the attention to detail and eco-friendliness. The food was amazing, our room was beautiful and the staff made us feel so spoiled. We rode twice a day with super horses and guides, getting quite close to wildlife and having some fun gallops along the way. The horses are well-trained and lots of fun to ride. The conservancy is huge and every ride was different. We absolutely loved our night fly-camping with the horses - such a special experience! We also took the chance to do a game drive one afternoon and got close to cheetahs and lions. Overall it was the perfect combination of riding, safari and rest at the beautiful lodge. One week definitely felt too short!

SAMPLE ITINERARY

This 6/7 night safari entails 3 or 4 nights at Borana Lodge, 1 night Fly Camping and 2 nights at Lewa Wilderness. We can also tailor-make a longer journey for you if you wish. The fly camp will either be set up by Borana or Lewa Wilderness. This can also be done in reverse due to availability or your personal preference. The itinerary is there to give you an idea on what to expect on this trail ride, but you can choose which activities you wish to do. The itinerary might change due to weather and wildlife movements, but any changes will be done with your best interest at heart.

Day 1 - ARRIVAL AT BORANA

Book your international flight to Jomo Kenyatta (Nairobi) International Airport. If you‘re doing a long international flight, and arrive late at night, we recommend an overnight in Nairobi which we are happy to arrange for you at an extra cost. Should you arrive on the morning of your adventure, you will need to arrive before 10 AM.  You will be met upon arrival and transferred to either your overnight hotel or to Wilson Airport. You will board a 1.5 hour light air charter flight to the Lewa Airstrip.

On arrival at Lewa Airstrip, you’ll be met by your guide in a game drive vehicle and have your first taste of life on safari! The drive is around 1.5 hours, depending on what wildlife is spotted en-route!

When you arrive at the lodge, you’ll have a briefing with your guide who will introduce you to life at Borana and all the activities on offer. The team at the lodge will help plan the next few days, ensuring you get to experience all the magic that Borana has to offer.

Settle into your rooms and take some time to relax and enjoy the lodge’s amenities, surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Borana Conservancy. Head to the stables after lunch to meet our expert guides and set off on horseback to explore. The first ride tends to be slower, allowing you to get used to the different riding style, saddles and get to know your four legged companion. Get back to the lodge in the warm, evening light and enjoy your first sundowner drinks overlooking the plains below. Head to the lodge for a decadent dinner.

Day 2 - EXPLORING BORANA

f you aren’t woken by the dawn chorus then you will receive a gentle wake-up call and a steaming cup of tea or coffee to enjoy in the comfort of your room. Start your horse riding safari with a full day of exploring the Borana Conservancy. Ride through diverse terrain, including rolling hills, open plains, and wooded areas, while encountering an abundance of wildlife along the way.

Enjoy a picnic breakfast amidst the breathtaking scenery before returning to the lodge for a well-deserved rest and lunch. After lunch, if you don’t fancy a siesta, then read, watch the wildlife go by from your deck, or enjoy the pool, an ideal place to cool down and escape the midday heat. Spend the evening game driving on the hunt for big cats. Sundowner drinks might be enjoyed at Pride Rock or another incredible lookout point. Dinner and night at Borana Lodge.

Day 3 - EXPLORE BORANA LODGE

Experience Behind the Scenes of Conservation – Head out at first light to join the team of Borana Conservancy rangers as they track rhino on foot. This is a wonderful experience which gives a true ‘behind the scenes’ view into how a successful rhino conservancy is run. Return to Borana Lodge for a relaxing lunch and siesta before you head out on your riding adventure.

After afternoon treats of homemade cakes or scones, you spend the afternoon on horseback, cantering alongside herds of zebra or jumping fallen logs in a glade of yellow fever trees. Return to Borana for a bush dinner at The Hide, enjoying a locally sourced Swahili inspired menu under a blanket of stars.

Day 4 - BORANA LODGE (IF DOING 7 NIGHT TRAIL)

f staying for 4 nights, you have the freedom to choose which activities you would like to do. We recommend a long morning ride, heading off in a different direction. Enjoy some long canters across the plains, or follow the ancient elephant trails, navigating the tall grasses and forests in search of giraffe, zebra, antelope, elephant, buffalo – and any other surprises you can find.

In the afternoon, head out on a guided nature walk, game drive or a challenging mountain bike. Indulge in sundowner drinks out on the hilltops with nothing but wilderness around you. Head back to the lodge in the evening light, keeping a look out for the more elusive nocturnal wildlife. Enjoy a decadent candle lit dinner prepared by the executive chef and spend the evening telling anecdotes about the days adventures.

Pack your bags to depart early the next morning, you can choose to take just a day pack to the Fly Camp, or have all your luggage transported by the team. Then fall asleep in your luxurious room, listening to the sound of the night birds as you drift into sleep.

Day 4 / 5 - FLY CAMPING

Today is a full day in the saddle, as you ride to the fly camp. Set off early, on an adventurous ride, heading into Ngare Ndare Forest. Stop under the shade of the trees for a saddle bag lunch, and siesta. Then immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the wilderness as you journey through varied ecosystems, from dense woodland forest to open savanna. Being on the horses allows you to canter across the plains and cross down in to the valleys where no car can go.

Arrive to find hot showers and a cold beer waiting for you, in whichever order you prefer! The camp is run by a team of Maasai who will cook for you over an open fire and ensure your tents are set up in the best locations for star gazing. Experience an unforgettable night under the starlit African sky with the horses tethered nearby.

Day 5 / 6 - RIDE TO LEWA WILDERNESS

After an early breakfast, your horses will be saddled up, ready to take you on the next leg of your journey towards Lewa Wilderness. You will leave Borana Conservancy as you cross the Ngare Ndare River and traverse the scenic landscape, encountering diverse wildlife and enjoying the thrill of riding through untouched wilderness.

Arrive at Lewa Wilderness in time for a late lunch and settle into your comfortable accommodation, either in a Garden Cottage or Hillside Room. All your luggage will be transported for you by the team. Say goodbye to your Borana guides and horses as they head back home again. After a long day in the saddle, you may opt for a relaxed afternoon at the lodge or head out on an evening game drive to discover your new surroundings and look back across the route which you rode from Borana. In the evening, gather around the long dining table to have dinner, or request private dining either at your cottage or at the pool.

Day 6 / 7 - LEWA WILDERNESS

You have the freedom to choose which activities you would like to do. Activities include horse riding, game drives, walks with the Masai, Village visits or even camel trekking. There are 2 activities a day, with plenty of time around lunch to relax at the lodge. Immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity and conservation efforts of the area, appreciating the unique beauty of the Lewa-Borana landscape. After another incredible dinner, fall asleep in your luxurious room, listening to the sound of the night birds as you drift into sleep.

Day 7 / 8 - DEPARTURE

On your departure day, there is usually enough time for a last ride before tucking into a delicious breakfast. Then it’s time to pack your bags and hop into the game drive vehicle for your drive back to the airstrip. Here you’ll board your light air charter flight back to Wilson Airport, arriving around 1.30PM. We’ll arrange that you are collected there and taken to either your overnight hotel, or to JKIA airport for your departing flight. If you have a late night flight, we can arrange a driver so you can head out for dinner or explore Nairobi. Remember, we can also arrange flights to the Masai Mara, Kenyan Coast or Zanzibar to extend the adventure beyond your horse safari.

The fly camp is extremely comfortable with full linens, pillows, duvets, bed frames and a mess tent including a fully stocked bar, lounge area and full team looking after you. The season, weather and wildlife movements will dictate where the camp is set up, no two nights are the same! The fly camp sleeps a maximum of twelve and a minimum of two guests on an exclusive basis.

LEWA WILDERNESS GARDEN COTTAGES

These are the original rooms built by David and Delia Craig when they started the lodge. They are the cottages closest to the main house and living areas. Each consists of two en-suite bedrooms joined by a comfortable sitting area with a bar and cosy fireplace. The three garden rooms are exceptionally spacious, bright and sunny, perfect for families and also those who do not wish to be too far from the main areas.

LEWA WILDERNESS HILLSIDE COTTAGES

There are six individual hillside cottages, each with a unique layout. These cottages were built to capture the stunning views out over the valley and the sound of the river below where safari animals often congregate. Each cottage has en-suite facilities, a cozy sitting area and fireplace, and a private outdoor verandah where one can enjoy a morning coffee whilst watching the sunrise or a peaceful private dinner.

THE DESTINATION

THE BORANA CONSERVANCY

In the embrace of Kenya’s breathtaking scenery, Borana Conservancy stands as a haven for those seeking an exceptional safari experience. Framed by the iconic Mount Kenya, Borana unfolds its natural masterpiece—vast open plains, rolling hills, and untouched wilderness. Venturing into Borana unveils the essence of a Kenyan safari, where game drives and horseback safaris promise an intimate rendezvous with the untamed splendor of the region. Renowned within Laikipia, Borana Conservancy competes with the illustrious Maasai Mara, offering a safari journey that transcends expectations. Beyond its role as a wildlife sanctuary, Borana exemplifies a commitment to conservation, fostering a harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife. Here, sustainability and cultural preservation weave together to create a narrative of enduring biodiversity.

LEWA WILDERNESS

Nestled against the majestic backdrop of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, Lewa Wilderness captivates with its enchanting vistas and diverse landscapes. The terrain unfolds like a living tapestry, featuring expansive open plains, gentle rolling hills, meandering rivers, dramatic valleys, and awe-inspiring escarpments. Embarking on a game drive or horseback ride at Lewa promises an unparalleled Kenyan safari experience. Situated in the heart of Laikipia, a region gaining acclaim as one of Kenya’s premier safari destinations, Lewa Wilderness competes with the iconic Maasai Mara in delivering a truly immersive safari adventure. This natural haven, comprised of ranches and conservancies, exemplifies a harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife, united in their commitment to preserving and safeguarding the rich biodiversity of the region.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Borana and Lewa Wilderness are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • Our horses spend their days outside in a herd, allowing them to live naturally alongside all the other animals on the reserve.
  • They are bought in twice a day to be fed, checked, groomed and temperatures taken by the devoted guides. The horses are stabled in the evenings or tied onto a picket line if they are out on a trail ride.
  • The horses all get a physio and dentist visit at least once a year.
  • The grooms are trained farriers who take care of the horses’ feet regularly, and an expert farrier comes to visit once a year to ensure that their techniques are up to standard.
  • The tack is checked and cleaned regularly to ensure it is kept to the best possible standards.
  • A careful record is kept of how much work each horse does to ensure they have rest days and are not overworked. There is a dedicated onsite horse trainer who is continually keeping the horses in tip-top shape.
  • As we nearly always do rides from the lodge – rather than mobile safaris – guests can request to use the same horse every day for the duration of their stay, however, we love changing the horses to give guests different experiences and give the horses rest. So for this trail ride, guests will ride 2-4 horses at Borana Lodge and 1-2 horses at Lewa. After a long day of riding, horses will get the day off.

Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.
