Discover the Heart of Kenya on a Horseback Safari
Experience life in the wild at Rocky Hollow, a true Kenyan bush home offering authentic horse riding safaris
Tucked into the rugged valleys of northern Laikipia, Rocky Hollow Lodge is a home as much as a riding base, a sprawling stonework house surrounded by gardens, rocky koppies, and seasonal riverbeds. Every corner invites you to explore. The quirky, colourful bedrooms each have their own charm, while the cosy lounge, complete with a roaring fireplace, feels like the heart of the home. Out on the wide verandah overlooking the riverbed, mornings begin with coffee in hand and end with an afternoon read as the light fades over Laikipia. It’s clear that Charlie and Mouse McConnell have poured their hearts into creating this unique place, and guests quickly feel privileged to be welcomed into their home. While not a luxury lodge, it offers all the comfort and warmth you need for a truly memorable stay.
The real highlight, however, is the riding. From the stables, riders set off straight into the bush, winding along sandy riverbeds, over open plains built for fast canters, and across rolling hills dotted with acacias. The horses, a mix of thoroughbred crosses and Appaloosas, are responsive and sure-footed, perfectly at home in this wild terrain. Expect to weave past zebra herds, spot giraffe browsing among the trees, or even catch sight of rare gerenuk. You’ll not only encounter wildlife, but also witness everyday life in rural Kenya – Children swimming in the river, cattle being herded through the valleys, and the distant song of women carrying across the breeze. And in just minutes, you may spot a herd of elephants browsing, a humbling reminder of how wildlife and people coexist here.
Led by Charlie, with his small, hands-on team, rides are intimate and personal – A chance to share stories, laughter, and adventure. Between rides, guests can wander the gardens, visit the nearby baboon project, or enjoy dinners under a starlit African sky. You can also head out on game drives, enjoy push picnics or explore further afield. For confident riders seeking horse riding safaris in Kenya that blend adventure with authenticity, Rocky Hollow offers a truly special slice of horse riding in Africa.
QUICK FACTS
SAMPLE ITINERARY / WHAT TO EXPECT
Your stay at Rocky Hollow is completely tailor-made and the itinerary will vary depending on the number of people at the lodge, how long you’re staying for, and what’s on your bucket list. Activities will be planned around the wildlife in the area and the weather to ensure you get the best possible experience.
A TYPICAL DAY AT ROCKY HOLLOW
Mornings at Rocky Hollow begin with coffee on the verandah as the first light spills across the valley. Soon after breakfast, riders head to the stables, saddling up for an exhilarating morning exploring the surrounding hills, riverbeds, and acacia plains. Cantering alongside zebra or elephant tracks, it’s the kind of riding that makes time blur. Midday is for rest and riders can enjoy a lazy lunch under the trees or in the dining area, followed by a siesta or a good book in the shade.
Afternoon adventures might mean another ride, a walk through the koppies, or a visit to the baboon project before gathering around the fire for drinks. Evenings are relaxed and social, with dinner under a canopy of stars and stories shared with Charlie and Mouse, a fitting end to a day that feels both wild and wonderfully homely.
HORSE RIDING
Riding at Rocky Hollow is personal, flexible, and full of adventure. Each ride feels different, from fast canters along the old airstrip to winding trails through the bush and sandy riverbeds. The horses, a mix of thoroughbred crosses and Appaloosas, are responsive, sure-footed, and clearly love their work. It’s a great destination for confident riders wanting to explore wild Laikipia on horseback, with wildlife encounters and incredible scenery at every turn.
GAME DRIVES
For those moments when you’d rather take in the scenery on four wheels, guided game drives venture into the neighbouring reserves and nearby conservancies, including the nearby Lolldaigas. In the neighbouring reserves, the bush is quite thick and you’ll often come around the corner to see herds of elephants or towers of giraffe that magically melt into the bushes. Expect classic Laikipia views, rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and open plains and sightings of elephants, zebra, giraffe, and sometimes big cats. It’s a chance to see more of the wildlife-rich region and enjoy sundowners in some truly spectacular spots.
GUIDED WALKS
Guided bush walks are the best way to slow down and see the smaller details, tracks, birds, plants, and the rhythms of daily life in the bush. Led by Charlie or one of the team, walks range from gentle strolls around the property to more adventurous routes up into the koppies for panoramic views of Mount Kenya and the valleys below.
SWIMMING IN THE NATURAL ROCK POOLS
Instead of a conventional pool, Rocky Hollow has natural stone pools formed among the koppies, where rainwater collects in clear, cool basins. A swim here is a refreshing treat after a long ride and a bit of an adventure since there may be frogs or even small fish.
PICNIC LUNCH RIDES
Some of the best days at Rocky Hollow end with picnic rides, long morning rides through the bush, stopping at a scenic spot for a relaxed, home-cooked lunch under an acacia tree. Horses rest in the shade while guests enjoy good food, laughter, and sweeping views before riding back to the lodge in the late afternoon light.
VISIT THE HABITUATED BABOONS
Just a short drive from the lodge, the Baboon Research Project is a fascinating look into the behaviour and social structure of habituated troops of wild baboons. You’ll spend a memorable couple of hours walking with the baboons and the scientists studying them. The team is always happy to answer any questions you might have on these animals and they know each indiviual by name. It’s a unique and educational experience that few travellers ever get to see. Watching their interactions up close gives a whole new appreciation for Laikipia’s wildlife.
DAY TRIPS TO THE LOLLDAIGAS
For a change of pace, head into the Lolldaiga Hills Conservancy, a stunning landscape of rolling hills and dramatic escarpments. Day trips here include scenic game drives, with the chance to spot elephants, buffalo, lions and the region’s famous Grevy’s zebra. It’s one of the most beautiful corners of northern Kenya and well worth the journey! This is at an extra cost, but you can make a full day out of the adventure.
EXPERIENCE THE LOCAL CULTURE
To the east and north lie large group ranches, and Rocky Hollow is fortunate to be situated among the Laikipia Masai. Traditionally nomadic pastoralists, many now live in permanent homesteads, some made of stone and some still traditional mud houses, raising goats, sheep, and cattle when the grass allows. They are a gentle, welcoming people who maintain their traditions with pride. Weddings are lively celebrations of beadwork, song, and dance. Children walk to school past elephants and other wildlife, and the community works together to manage the land and its resources, living in harmony with the rhythms of the bush. You’ll get a really great sense of the community during your stay as you’ll ride past many of the villages and Charlie will be able to tell you a lot of their history.

THE ACCOMMODATION
Rocky Hollow
Built over the course of seven years, the house was given time to evolve naturally, and today it carries the charm and character of a much older home. Designed to feel more like a welcoming residence than a hotel, no two bedrooms are alike. Each has its own unique personality, and in some cases, a distinctive feature. What they all share are large windows, high ceilings, full privacy, and en-suite bathrooms – most with bathtubs. When not out exploring on foot or horseback, guests can retreat to one of several cosy rooms with a book and a drink. But during the heat of the day, the breezy and shaded verandah is the perfect place to unwind, and where lunch is most often enjoyed.
The Bedrooms
Seven en-suite bedrooms are available for guests with five doubles and two twins. These are arranged in a loose circle around the gardens. Each room offers sweeping views of the distant hills and closer glimpses of the valley below, where you might spot a browsing dik-dik or impala. The area in front of the house remains unfenced, allowing wildlife to move freely and adding to the sense of wild tranquillity. The rooms are allocated depending on the number of guests staying at the lodge, but each one is unqiuely furnished.Â

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES
Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Ol Malo are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on the top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:
- There are around 15 horses at Rocky Hollow, all personally trained by Charlie and Mouse to ensure that they are level headed when out in the bush.
- New horses are introduced slowly, and since they see wildlife roaming around the house and paddocks, they quickly become accustomed to seeing animals such as giraffe, zebra and even elephants
- Care is taken to match horse and rider
- The horses have a schedule with dedicated rest days as well as schooling to keep them fit and responsive while out on trail
- The horses are fed breakfast and supper, with as much grazing during the day as possible. Some horses will get lunch as well, depending on their dietary needs
- During the day, they are free to as a herd, and in the evenings they stabled to keep them safe from predators
- The horses are groomed and vetted daily by a dedicated small team, with Mouse and Charlie being very hands on
- The tack is well fitted an cleaned after every ride
