Group Horse Safaris

The Ultimate Horseback Safari Adventure for Private Groups

Imagine a bespoke African adventure, designed just for you and your group. Whether you’re a riding club, a group of friends, or a family seeking an unforgettable journey, African Horse Safaris specialises in crafting horse riding holidays that bring people together in the most extraordinary settings.

With options to book out entire camps and lodges, your group can enjoy complete exclusivity — your own guides, horses, and staff, plus the freedom to shape each day exactly as you wish. Ride side by side across vast savannahs, enjoy game drives and sundowners together, or simply relax by the pool while non-riding companions soak in the tranquillity of the bush. For groups of eight or more, we often offer the perk of a complimentary saddle, either as a reward for the organiser or to reduce the cost for everyone.

Our private group safaris aren’t just about exclusivity — they’re about tailoring the experience to your group’s passions. From thrilling trail rides across the salt pans of Botswana or the deserts of Namibia, to family-friendly lodges in South Africa or conservation-focused camps in Zambia, no two safaris are the same. Whether you’re hunters and jumpers seeking fast-paced action, polo enthusiasts looking to combine safari with sport, or a mix of riders and non-riders wanting the best of both worlds, we’ll help you create the ultimate horse safari to suit your dynamic.

These journeys are about more than riding — they’re about connection, adventure, and shared memories that will last a lifetime. Ready to plan your dream group horse safari? Explore our destinations, discover group benefits, and be inspired by the many ways you can make Africa your own.

Perfect Choice for riding clubs

Group Group horse safaris are a natural fit for riding clubs, equestrian teams, or families who love horses. If your group thrives on speed and jumping, there are thrilling options in Kenya and Tanzania where long gallops, natural obstacles, and fast-paced riding make for a heart-racing adventure. For polo enthusiasts, we can arrange safaris where the horses play polo in the off-season — meaning you can watch matches, add on a few days to play a friendly chukka, or even try something new with our polo-cross internship. Families can also design safaris that suit every age and skill level, from pony rides for children to challenging trails for advanced riders. Whether you’re hunters, jumpers, polo players, or simply a group of horse lovers, Africa has a safari that will fit your style.

Travelling as a group comes with extra benefits. For groups of eight or more, we’re often able to include special perks to make your safari even more memorable, from a complimentary saddle to added experiences that elevate your journey. These offers are designed as a thank you for choosing to share the adventure with us, and they can be tailored to suit both riders and non-riders.

If you’re part of a riding group or club, get in touch with our team, we’ll help you plan the perfect exclusive safari, whether that’s a thrilling trail ride or a lodge-based adventure tailored to your members.

Exclusive Lodges for Groups

Some of Africa’s most enchanting lodges can be booked exclusively for your group, creating a private safari experience unlike any other. Most are small and intimate, hosting a maximum of 12–20 guests, which makes them perfect for families, groups of friends, or riding clubs who want the entire place to themselves. With your group as the only guests, the safari is perfectly tailored to you, from dining times to daily activities. Riders are often split into smaller groups according to ability, ensuring everyone enjoys the right pace and level of adventure, while still coming together to share stories around the campfire.

Lodge-based safaris also give you the freedom to mix in other activities. While riders head out across the plains, non-riders can enjoy game drives, guided walks, or relaxing moments in camp. In the Okavango Delta, groups can even glide through the waterways on traditional mokoros (dugout canoes) or head out on boat trips, adding even more variety to the adventure. Imagine gathering your friends or family at Macatoo in the Okavango Delta, where you not only get to experience splashy canters, but game drives and boat safaris. Or book Ant’s Nest in South Africa’s Waterberg, where bush walks, mountain biking, and poolside sundowners offer the perfect balance for riders and non-riders alike. For something truly off-the-beaten-track, Simalaha in Zambia combines intimate exclusivity with a unique conservation story, making it a meaningful choice for groups who want to be part of Africa’s future.

Selected Trail Rides with group Perks

For groups seeking a more adventurous riding holiday, we offer a select number of trail rides that combine adventure, wildlife, and personalised attention. Our Tuli Horse Safari, Wild Coast Trail, and Mobile Delta Ride each take a maximum of 8 riders, making them ideal for small groups who want a private, immersive safari experience. On these trails, the pace is tailored to the group, and we can often make the 8th saddle complimentary, either as a reward for the organiser or to enhance the overall group experience.

For larger and more experienced riding groups, we can also arrange exclusive trail rides for 2–12 riders of similar ability. These private safaris allow you to explore some of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes from galloping across the Namib Desert, to riding alongside giant tuskers in Tanzania, or exploring the wilds of Kenya.

Each trail is designed to give you the freedom of adventure while still offering safety, expert guidance, and the intimate feel of a private safari. Whether it’s your first multi-day ride or a journey for experienced equestrians, these trails provide a unique way to connect with Africa’s wild beauty and create unforgettable memories with your group.

Tailor-Made Itineraries

No two groups are the same, and your safari shouldn’t be either. We specialise in creating custom itineraries that reflect your group’s pace, interests, and experience. Combine horseback safaris in Kenya’s Masai Mara or Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Highlands with cultural visits, beach breaks in Zanzibar, or thrilling experiences like hot air balloon flights over the savannah.

Our itineraries can include riders and non-riders, balancing exhilarating trail rides with game drives, bush walks, or relaxed time at camp. Every element is flexible, giving your group the freedom to set the rhythm of your days, from dawn canters and wildlife encounters to quiet evenings under the stars.

Time-Share Style Safaris

For something truly unique, consider our “time-share” safaris, where you can book an exclusive block of weeks at a camp and fill it with your chosen group. This option allows you to create your own private retreat, shaping the atmosphere and itinerary exactly as you like. It’s ideal for groups who want the freedom of having their own base in Africa, with private guides, staff, and horses at their disposal. Spend two to four weeks riding through pristine wilderness, exploring game-rich areas, and relaxing in camp between adventures. Whether in Botswana, Zambia, or South Africa, these time-share safaris offer the rare chance to make Africa feel like your very own. It’s the closest thing to having your own private safari retreat in Africa.

FAQ for Group Horse Safaris

What is the minimum and maximum group size for a private horseback safari?

This depends on each of our rides. We can organise private safaris for any number of guests. However, if you are a group of less than 6, then this usually comes at an extra cost. On some rides we can secure a private ride if you are a group of 6 or more at no extra cost, but the norm is from 7 to 8 guests or more. For many rides, if you can secure a group of 8, then we can offer the 8th saddle free of charge.  The maximum number of riders and non-riders for private groups is usually 12, but it is always worth getting in touch if you have a group larger than this.

Is there a cost advantage for larger groups?

Yes! For many of our rides, should you have a group of eight riders, we offer one free saddle. This benefit can be used by the group organiser or can help reduce the overall cost for all participants, making your adventure more affordable.

Can our group have sole use of the camp?

Absolutely! We offer sole use of the entire camp for your group, which is ideal for tailored stays. This allows both riders and non-riders to enjoy the experience together, ensuring privacy and comfort for your entire group.

Can we create a custom itinerary for our group?

Definitely! We specialise in private rides and tailor-made itineraries, allowing you to customise your adventure based on your group’s interests, skill levels, and desired activities. Whether you want more time in the saddle or a mix of riding and relaxation, we can accommodate your needs.

What types of groups typically book private horse rides?

Our private group safaris are popular among riding instructors, groups of friends who ride together, polo clubs, hunt clubs, and equestrian influencers getting a group together. We can also create tailored trips for interest groups such as photography and yoga.

What riding experience levels are required for participants?

Our safaris cater to a range of experience levels, from beginners to advanced riders. When booking, we’ll assess your group’s riding abilities to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and safe experience on the trails.

Are non-riders welcome to join the group?

Yes, non-riders are more than welcome on many of our safaris! With sole use of the camp, your non-riding friends and family can partake in the adventure, enjoying the stunning scenery and engaging in other activities, such as game drives and nature walks.
